For anyone who might have missed this, the Emergency Services Sector Management Team at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has an interesting webinar scheduled for TOMORROW from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. EST:  "Maui Wildfires and Next Steps". This webinar will promote awareness of the Maui, Hawaii, wildfires that took place in August 2023. In addition, speakers will highlight various tools and programs that emergency services personnel can use to mitigate their risks for wildland fires in the future. Participants will learn about: - The after-action review process of the Maui Fire Department, the multiple challenges they faced, and lessons learned. - The Environmental Protection Agency’s response to the wildfires and challenges during response and recovery. - An overview of the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center as an interagency wildland fire learning organization, its history, philosophical roots, and available products. - The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s hazard mitigation grant programs and upcoming opportunities. We have been activated for our fourth wildfire response in just the past month. The situation is alarming as over the last five years, California averaged 2,643 wildfires burning 16,000+ acres. Yet, in just the first six months of this year, California has already seen 2,156 wildfires scorching over 89,000+ acres. While many whistle-and-flashlight, warm-body security companies try to provide these services, only trained and experienced professionals who understand the dynamics of an emergency can successfully and effectively manage such crises. Today I was giving a lesson on wildfires to our firefighters and one of the areas that I was most focus on, was the significance of communication. Those who have fought wildfires know from first hand that in the dynamic world of wildfire operations, conditions can change in an instant. Clear communication ensures that information about fire behavior, weather conditions, and resource availability is conveyed quickly and accurately. This allows Incident Commanders and crews to make informed decisions without delay - key decisions, that could determine the outcome of the incident. Added to that, effective communication enhances situational awareness across all levels of the operations and consequently it enhances safety. When all team members share a common understanding of the current conditions and actions, it minimizes the risk of conflicting decisions and ensures a unified response as well as it allows for the efficient allocation of resources, ensuring that critical areas receive what they need the time that they need it. It is clear to me that ACCURATE and TIMELY communication is key to assessing risks and making effective decision making. It simple words, it enables the identification of emerging threats and the implementation of appropriate measures to mitigate them. In studying for ISC2 CC cert, I've learned a LOT about Disaster Recovery (DR) and a BCP (Business Continuity Plan). While it's mostly focused on cybersecurity, physical security is also, of course, a huge focus. In regards to the recent hurricanes, I saw this story on the AquaFence, a barrier system which protected a Tampa hospital during the hurricane, installed by the hospital in 2019: a perfect example of a proactive procedure in order to restore / maintain business operations.
