Having Too many certifications is a true valuable metric or just vanity? During my attendance at the Project Management Institute Global Summit 2024 Series Europe# in Berlin in one of the networking session I had the pleasure of talking with a fellow Project Manager who, looking at my Summit badge and having noticed the list of my credentials, exclaimed “Ah! you are one of the PMI Members who collect credentials!". 😀 His exclamation surprised me and raised doubts in me about the value of too many credentials, as if having several ones was no longer perceived as a valuable metric but just of vanity. Below are my thoughts, but I'd love to hear yours too: 1. No certification demonstrates effectiveness and competence, so you need to find a way to balance formal credentials with actual capabilities. That means any credential is a necessary but not sufficient condition for being recognized in the specific role. You also need to have experience and show real ability. 2. I like taking courses and getting certifications on things that I can reuse in my work, whatever is the application field. 3. I hold more than 20 reliable certifications from globally recognized organizations, and I can assure you that I have gained benefits from each of them. 4. The world is evolving rapidly, and we need to stay updated to ensure we grow as the world grows, so professional development is becoming a necessity rather than an option and this can be done through courses, webinars, self-reading and even through certifications. 5. Obtaining relevant certifications can help you demonstrate that you have mastered the topics and reference materials. 6. Some certifications like PMP, CBAP or PgMP have an experience requirement, so the certification is a sort of consolidation of how much you are actually working in that field. 7. As reported by Rami Kaibni, PgMP®, PMP®, CBAP® in the article on “Added Value of Professional Development” published in PM World Journal, “It is the journey that matters, not the certification itself and what matters most is how you put it into practice afterward." I’m an experienced professional and a life long learner who achieves certifications for the purpose of learning, and as part of my commitment to the profession then this is a valuable metric, for me.
