🎤 Overheard at CentHERing HIV Prevention: HER Voice Matters 🏥 At #HIVR4P 2024 in Lima, our #FPNN Community Reporters attended the powerful CentHERing HIV Prevention: HER Voice Matters session. Global experts discussed the unique challenges women face in HIV prevention and the urgent need for tailored solutions. 💬 Yvette Raphael (Kenya) emphasized: “PREP is revolutionary for women—it gives them the power to protect their own health. But prevention must be as prioritized as treatment. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution.” 💬 Dr. Vanessa Apea (UK) highlighted: “Prevention should be de-medicalized and accessible. Women need to see themselves as candidates for prevention and stay linked to care.” The message is clear: to achieve UNAIDS 2030 targets, HIV prevention strategies must be diverse, inclusive, and adaptable to women’s realities. As PrEP for HIV prevention moves from a single to a multi-method market, like the market for family planning, we need to understand facilitators/barriers for use of injectable cabotegravir by women in sub-Saharan Africa to design communication strategies and behavior change interventions. There were an estimated 1.3 million new HIV infections in 2023, indicating a 39% decline since 2010, and a 60% drop from the peak in 1995. This figure shows a significant progress in prevention efforts globally. 77% of all people living with HIV globally are accessing antiretroviral therapy (ART), with higher access among women (83%) than men (72%). The global targets for 2025 include 95% of all people with diagnosed HIV on ART and 95% of those achieving viral suppression. These statistics underscore the ongoing efforts in HIV prevention, treatment, and the need for continued vigilance to meet global health targets. The fight against HIV demands continued innovation in prevention, treatment, and cure research, alongside unwavering commitment to education, reducing stigma, and ensuring equitable access to healthcare. #worldaidsday2024 #aidsawareness #aidsprevention

Today is National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (#NGMHAAD) and I want to share how critical of a role #publichealth professionals play in addressing the #HIVepidemic, especially today in regards to the rates we see in #gay and #bisexual men. HIV disproportionately impacts Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM), with recent data from Philadelphia showing the continuing impact of HIV on gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). In 2022, just over half of new diagnoses were among MSM (51.0%) and another 2.4% were among MSM who also injected drugs. The HIV epidemic continues to disproportionately impact Black and Hispanic MSM compared to White MSM with 72.6% new HIV diagnoses among Black men, and 65% among Hispanic men occurring in MSM compared to 53.3% of White men. Social and structural issues including HIV stigma, homophobia, discrimination, poverty, and limited access to high-quality health care, influence health outcomes and continue to drive these inequities. If you are interested in learning more and for additional information and resources, please refer to the following: - Visit Phillykeeponloving.com - Check out the Philadelphia Department of Health HIV Surveillance Report (HIVSurveillance_Report_2022.pdf (phila.gov) As a child, one of the greatest gifts I was given was being raised by a committed, loving, intersectional, and activism-centered community of gay men and Black women, of which this virus has been a defining and decimating force they've been at the forefront of fighting. Everyday (but today especially) uplift the voices, stories, and work of gay/bisexual men who have experienced and continue to advocate for raising HIV awareness so we may see an end to it in our lifetimes or the very next.

IAVI's Yvonne Wangũi Machira, director of socio-behavioral research, spoke to Devex about the continued need for engagement with communities during the rollout of HIV prevention tools. “But when oral PrEP rolled out in Kenya and many other African countries, the messaging was that it’s targeting certain key populations, targeting gay men, targeting sex workers. And there’s already so much stigma around those populations,” Machira said. “So what happened is that we’ve had a black market in Nairobi evolve around oral PrEP, where people actually buy the oral PrEP instead of accessing it for free in a public health facility because there’s less stigma, less questions asked.” The UPTAKE study (www.uptakestudy.org), led by IAVI and our partners, aims to better understand these gaps. Findings presented at #AIDS2024 revealed that, although 61% of adolescent girls and young women were aware of oral PrEP, only 12% were using it. 🔍 How can researchers and policymakers overcome this hesitancy? The U.S. aims to end new HIV transmissions by 2030, but many people still face barriers to accessing HIV prevention and treatment due to limited resources and healthcare options. These barriers will only be amplified if the U.S. Congress cuts funding to life-saving HIV programs, that currently support more than 500,000 Americans living with HIV, and targeted HIV prevention efforts in the most highly affected parts of the country. U.S. government HIV programs are under threat with proposed funding cuts of over $700 million. Take action now—tell your representatives to #SaveHIVFunding and protect people living with and affected by HIV in the U.S. 👉 bit.ly/savehivfunding2025

Empowering Choices for Public Health: Strategies for HIV Prevention In the fight against HIV, education and access to resources are key. At EHAI Nigeria, we are committed to raising awareness about effective prevention methods: 1. Safer Sex Practices: Consistent condom use, limiting sexual partners, and encouraging open communication with partners about HIV status are crucial for overall sexual health and HIV prevention. 2. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP): This medication can be a powerful tool for individuals at high risk of HIV infection. We support efforts to increase access to PrEP for those who need it most. 3. Harm Reduction Programs: Providing clean needles and syringes to people who inject drugs plays a vital role in preventing needle-sharing and subsequent HIV transmission. 4. Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT): Antiretroviral therapy for pregnant women living with HIV can significantly reduce the risk of passing the virus to their babies. We advocate for comprehensive PMTCT programs to ensure healthy outcomes for mothers and children. Getting tested for HIV is critical for early detection and treatment.
