Support the Stop CMV Act! Congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) affects approximately 1 per every 200 births in the United States. It is the most common viral cause of birth defects and is the most common cause of non-hereditary hearing loss. The bipartisan, bicameral STOP CMV Act (S. 3864/H.R.7542) authorizes new funding to incentivize hospitals and other health care entities that care for children to screen babies for CMV within the first 21 days after birth. The bill also authorizes funding to collect data on CMV and to assist in the education and training of health care providers, patients, and the public. Finally, the legislation directs the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct research into congenital CMV. https://buff.ly/3Tj2MRJ

Historically, there has been nowhere else to go for younger adults living with conditions like traumatic brain injury, HIV/AIDs, serious injuries due to motor vehicle accidents, drug overdose, hemiplegia, quadriplegia, severe mental illness and neurodegenerative diseases. The significant increase in younger people moving into nursing homes followed the Medicaid Expansion of the Affordable Care Act, which covers nursing home services for younger adults. Although they now have a place to live for a short- or long-term stay, it remains unclear if younger adults benefit from this type of care setting and if their needs can be met. Earlier this year we heard from Fanny Mochel on how Adult services can inform paediatric practice, and publications like this one really high-light the success, and the gaps, in our current management approaches. Are you a healthcare provider who helps care for newborns? Screening for critical congenital heart defects (CHDs) can help identify newborns with a critical CHD before they go home from the birth hospital, aiding in prompt care and treatment. Timely care may prevent disability or death early in life for infants with critical CHDs. Current published recommendations focus on screening newborns in the well-baby nursery or other units from which discharge from the hospital is common during a newborn’s first week.
