There's a lot we can learn from the #Olympics, which I apply in my daily life as a #litigator. 1. Celebrating the wins of others takes nothing away from our own achievements. See US gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles showing respect to Brazilian Rebeca Andrade with a spontaneous bow duirng the medal ceremony, see also Mondo Duplantis' competitors joining a stadium full of spectators to cheer him on during his world record attempt for the pole vault. I congratulate my opponents frequently on a job well done when they win. 2. Treating each other with respect and acknowledging each others' strengths not only creates an environment where everybody can thrive, it can spur each other on to even greater achievements. Competition can be a powerful motivator for personal growth across various fields and industries far beyond sports. The pursuit of excelleence is itself a deeply satisfying process of becoming the person person possible through the highs, lows and the challenges that come along with it. Ultimately, the reward for excellence is not only the medal, but the person one grows into and the relationships forged along the way. I encourage my young associates to push themselves hard, learn from others (even their opponents), so that they can become the best version of themselves. It's a hard slog. But it's an amazing journey. 3. Inspiration does not only manifest amongst the winners. There are competitors who come in 80th who still are heroes as their persistence to seeing the assignment through to the very end and never-say-die attitude, are life lessons to be kept close to heart. As litigators, we will lose. But we don't take it to heart, reflect, and make sure we do better the next time. It's a constant journey. Watching the IMSA - International Motor Sports Association Detroit race today with Benjamin Bates Every single person on the race team knows *exactly* what they’re responsible to produce. The results are pretty clear. Nutty things happen in races. There’s little to no control over the track conditions or the competition. This makes me think about high performance teams in business. We can’t guarantee success but we can put our team in the best position to achieve it. How’s your team? Is every single person “race team clear”?

Know The Pace! Every connection matters. Every race ran matters. Recently, I spoke with a dynamic communicator and asked about navigating a myriad of personas at the same time. Before I begin, I don’t have the answer because…it is complicated…LOL. However, one thought in our discussion centered around the importance of pace. We all have our own pace, but what happens when you are met with a conflicting pace? Recently, I watched the American Olympic trials, particularly the long-distance runners. After witnessing many races prior, this time I intentionally focused on the runners pace. Listening to the commentators elevated my interest as they detailed each runner’s strength and habits during a race. Everything was strategic with the goal of winning the race, however points of unity were evident when everyone decided to run together. Too often we run ahead or fall behind which results in an underperforming time or underwhelming race, but running together creates the possibility of everyone achieving their personal best. This theme highlighted the course of the Olympic trials and while only one person won their respective race, achieving new records, other runners in the same race achieved their personal best. The goal of a leader is not to outrun everyone, but to know the pace so that everyone can achieve their personal best. Remember to know the pace! #BetterTogether
