DODGEBALL HISTORY MADE Two weeks ago, we hosted the first ever Western European Championships in Eaubonne, France. The regional format is a new structure for the European Dodgeball Federation, where a select group of nations are invited based on geographical proximity, and are able to field up to three teams in each division. This encourages development, allowing younger and more inexperienced players to break into the international dodgeball scene and get their first international caps. For the Western European Championships, these nations are France, England, Wales, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and, for the first time at a European event, Portugal. Thanks to the help of an entirely volunteer media team, we were able to establish a livestream of the event for free for all viewers, available on our EDF YouTube channel. Over the course of the weekend, over 1,000 unique viewers tuned in to the channel, garnering over 1500 viewing hours and almost 10,000 views on the channel over two days. These figures, for a budget stream in a regional competition, bode well for the future of dodgeball – they are comparable to the figures on initial broadcast seen at the 2019 European Championships, a far larger event with three times as many nations attending. This indicates that the exponential growth of dodgeball viewership is continuing as expected. This livestream also formed part of our work to develop a “Livestream Toolkit”: a set of information and software that will enable nations to set up livestreams of their home leagues cheaply or freely. The fact that the livestream was able to be run entirely for free was proof of concept for the toolkit, while also showing gaps within the kit that will have to be resolved before releasing to nation members. Overall the event was a huge success, setting up some important milestones and backmarkers for future Western European Championships. The lessons learned from this first ever iteration of the event will help EDF make key decisions over the coming months as we strive to maintain this fantastic growth. #Dodgeball #EuropeanChampionships #SportsEvents #Athletics #Livestreaming #EventManagement #CommunityEngagement #YouthDevelopment #Volunteerism #Teamwork #Sportsmanship #InternationalSports

A Team Davie goal in recent years has been to take the kids to the Paris 2024 Olympics. Jon/Dad helped bring the Olympics to London, way-back-when. So this goal was meaningful to us. And this week we achieved it… We watched the football - men’s and women’s - and the women’s rugby sevens (Team Davie’s two favourite sports); We cheered for Iraq, Argentina, Columbia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, Australia, Ireland, France, USA… and, of course, for our very own Team GB; We travelled to Lyon, then to Paris, then back to Lyon. We took planes, trains, trams and the Metro, and we averaged 12km on foot each day, in 35 degree heat - a feat of endurance and, at times, one that tested our team spirit! We saw winners, losers, celebrated heroes and unsung ones: namely the 45,000 strong team of volunteers who welcome, chaperone and signpost the millions of fans from all over the world, the professionals, who work tirelessly for years to prepare the hosting cities for the biggest show on earth, and the fans themselves, who flock from the 206 competing countries to support the 10,714 sportsmen and women. The Olympics is astonishing: it is as audacious as it is inspiring. It teaches us what we can achieve when we dare and when we come together. It’s about competition on the field and collaboration and inclusion off. It’s about audacity, ambition, courage, determination, physical and mental strength, overcoming adversity, valour, heroism. It’s about individual and team spirit. It’s about setting goals, hard work, sacrifice and achievement. It showcases our global diversity *and* commonality. It demands the best of us individually, while giving us a deep sense of belonging. I wonder how we might extend, amplify and emulate the spirit of the Olympics in our teams, organisations, communities and teams? I know that I return to my work as an exec and leadership coach feeling inspired and invigorated to enable others to perform like our awe-inspiring Olympians. How are the Olympic Games inspiring you in your work? #Olympicgames #Paris2024 #Olympicspirit #inspiration

Every four years, millions of Americans join billions of their fellow humans across the globe to celebrate the astonishing athletic feats at the Summer Olympics. The Olympics create a unique atmosphere that fosters unity and inspiration. These two-week events ignite passion for various sports that might otherwise go unnoticed. And suddenly we want to play rugby, do a backflip, buy a skateboard, play badminton, join a handball league, or get a surfboard. Unlike most team allegiances, the Olympics are not a day-to-day or seasonal pursuit. They come into our lives in intense two-week bursts every few years, filling us with wonder as we watch athletes, most of whom we are just learning about. It’s a very different type of sports story. The stories of athletes overcoming tremendous odds or achieving incredible feats resonate deeply with us, often transcending the sport itself. They remind us of the human spirit’s resilience and the collective joy of celebrating achievements together as a nation. But ultimately, it is the feeling of connection to something bigger — to athletes and viewers across the world — that entices so many people watching the Olympics every four years. The beauty of the Olympics lies in its ability to showcase not just athleticism, but the indomitable spirit of humanity as a whole. Each-year cycle brings together diverse cultures and nations transcending borders and differences to celebrate shared values of perseverance, dedication, and sportsmanship. The Games become a stage where dreams are made, stories of triumph are written, and friendships are forged across the world. As we witness athletes push their limits and inspire others, we are reminded that, regardless of our backgrounds, we all have the potential to rise above challenges and achieve greatness together. In this way, the Olympics serve as a powerful testament to the beauty of unity and the enduring belief in the human capacity for excellence.
