The prosperity of basic science research has also benefited the domestic industry, and the breakthrough research results obtained in academia have led to the creation of technological innovations in the industry. The young generation of aspiring researchers trained in academia have moved to the industries in research positions and have supported the activities. However, in recent years, basic science research and the support for researchers have decreased from a long-term perspective. As a result, basic science research activities in Japan have been shrinking. This may be the reason why it is challenging to create innovations in Japan. In basic science research, groundbreaking results cannot be obtained by aiming for them. First, it is necessary to have an environment in which a wide range of basic science research can be conducted.  On this basis, in the course, each researcher patiently faces phenomena over a long period, discusses them, and repeats trial and error; unexpected experimental results and insights emerge from chance encounters. The solution of one question leads to the solution of the next, and it is a time-consuming process of continuous trial and error, not one that seeks easy results. Therefore, it is not something for which results should be evaluated on a short-term scale. For Japan to continue to generate innovation in the future, basic science research, which is the soil for such innovation, needs to be enriched again. Although we are providing quite a few investments with the aim of creating innovation, increasing objective investment to pursue research results will not enrich the basic science research soil. If the essential soil is emaciated, achieving the goal of creating innovations from Japan will never be achieved. Large amounts of monetary support are not required to support basic science research, but its nature requires a mechanism to continuously maintain and support a wide range of activities without seeking short-term results. It will also be necessary to establish an environment to ensure that the younger generation, who will be responsible for future research, can confidently pursue research careers. Only if basic scientific research is maintained can unexpected discoveries be made, leading to the creation of Japan's original technological innovations.
