🎙️Epilepsy and IMD🎧 The “Footprints of IMD” series is built on the fabulous IEMBase developed by Nenad Blau, Carlos Ferreira and colleagues. It seeks to link all known Inherited Metabolic Disorders with the body systems they affect. In the podcast, Nenad and Eva speak with authors from the series, maintaining a clinical focus and trying to highlight when a metabolic differential should be considered. In August’s episode, Eva Morava-Kozicz speaks with Phillip Pearl about metabolic epilepsies and the diverse nature of this phenotype in IMD. Delighted to bring you the latest instalment from the Footprints of IMD Series. In this episode Eva Morava-Kozicz (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai) speaks with Phillip Pearl (Boston Children's Hospital) a Professor of neurology and music who literally wrote the book on metabolic epilepsies. Epilepsy is a common feature of IMDs and may be the presenting feature of some. Professor Pearl explains when a seizure disorder might herald a metabolic diagnosis and briefly teases the complex relationship between neurology and music. Definitely worth a listen. The NIH defines rare diseases as those that effect less than 200,000 people in the US, which is less than 0.06% of the population. But considering that there are almost 7,000 identified rare diseases, that adds up to 10% of the country. Including me! The problem with rare diseases is that they are often overlooked and underfunded when it comes to research, which leads to a lack of treatment options. So I'm happy that we were able to have a special Leap Year episode of our podcast to shine a light on a research who is doing work in rare diseases for #rarediseaseday2024
Today we're celebrating #RareDiseaseDay2024 with an episode about a doctor who studies Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, Dr. Laura Manuelidis: https://lnkd.in/e-wcz5sM #Podcast #WomenInSTEM

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) presents a complex clinical profile that extends beyond the more visible manifestations, such as motor impairment and spasticity. Among the most challenging aspects of MS are its invisible symptoms—fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, neuropathic pain, and sensory disturbances—which often go unrecognized, yet profoundly impact the daily lives of patients. These symptoms are insidious, often subtle in their presentation, and can be easily overlooked in clinical assessments. Their invisibility does not diminish their significance; rather, it underscores the need for heightened vigilance and comprehensive care strategies. Early identification and management of these invisible symptoms are crucial for improving patient outcomes and quality of life. As healthcare professionals, it is imperative that we enhance our awareness and understanding of these hidden facets of MS. By doing so, we can provide more effective, holistic care and advocate for the necessary support systems to assist those living with this condition. https://lnkd.in/edQWZWpc #MultipleSclerosis #InvisibleSymptoms #Neurology #ClinicalCare #MSResearch #PatientCare #HealthcareProfessionals
