What's the hidden cost of global fisheries in high seas? The approach will be divided into two parts. So we begin to explore, in a quick knowbite, the concept of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs), the challenges of regulating the high seas, and the major players driving the global fisheries industry. Let's gain some insight into what's happening beyond our view! 😉

Here's what news we caught in the creels this week... A three-day event which aims to "shape the future of fisheries management" is taking place near Glasgow from 29 January. The event will be focused on nephrops and shellfish, and specifically collaboration opportunities between fishers, researchers, and policymakers. 🌊🦐https://lnkd.in/eZ4AzGb9 Scottish Government's Marine Directorate have published the confirmed Scottish Sea Fisheries Statistics for 2023. 🎣 Highlights: 501 thousand tonnes of sea fish and shellfish were landed by Scottish vessels in 2023, valued at £652 million! 📊 https://lnkd.in/dfPz5htB “A crucial step forward” for European oysters: a transformative collaboration between three Scotland-based companies and the renowned Roslin Institute is developing disease-resistant oyster strains to counteract devastating parasites. The approach marks a milestone in restoration and sustainability. 🦪🌍 https://lnkd.in/eQJC-r9e #NewsRoundup #SeafoodScotland #FishingIndustry #SeafoodInsight

#SustainableFisheries | In the expansive realm of fisheries management, the focus has traditionally centered on commercial endeavors, often overlooking the substantial influence of marine #recreationalfisheries (MRF). 🔬Kieran Hyder (Cefas) and Estanis Mugerza (AZTI), co-chairs of ICES Working Group on Recreational Fisheries Science (#WGRFS), have spearheaded the work on ICES (ICES - International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) Roadmap on Marine Recreational Fisheries. 🎣 This roadmap represents a crucial step toward equitable and sustainable #fisheriesmanagement, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts, innovative methodologies, and trust-building between recreational fishers and scientific bodies. 🐠 2024 in review: We questioned the health of the world's fisheries UVic marine ecologist Amanda Bates and her collaborators analyzed over 230 fisheries world-wide and found that their sustainability is likely overstated, with previous estimates of the number of fish in the ocean being too optimistic. The study was published in Science and could have implications for the management and long-term sustainability of fisheries. 🔗 Learn more about the fisheries study: https://ow.ly/44Z450UvAY6 🔗 Read our top 10 stories from 2024: https://ow.ly/ImLj50UvAY7

Following International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) publication of its yearly advice on widely distributed stocks, the Pelagic Advisory Council (Pelagic AC) published its yearly position paper on fishing opportunities for 2025. 🌊The PelAC recommends to find an agreement with coastal states on blue whiting, mackerel and atlanto-scandian herring to stop the setting of catches in excess of the scientific advice. 🌊The PelAC requests that an urgent benchmark be conducted for the Irish Sea and Celtic Sea herring stock assessments to address the mixing issues and to assess the impacts of overestimation of the Irish Sea stock, the unquantified mortality of the Celtic Sea stock. 🌊 The PelAC suggests limiting non fisheries anthropogenic impacts on spawning habitats especially for North Sea herring as underlined by ICES. The advice can be found on our website: https://lnkd.in/eSU5feT2 Esben Sverdrup - Jensen, Merel den Held, Dominic Rihan, Jérôme Jourdain Gonçalo Carvalho, Merel Barbosa #Pelagicfish #EAFM #sustainablefishing #CFP

🔍 Commissioned by Planet Tracker, MFE has developed a theoretical framework to evaluate the suitability of marine fisheries for participation in blue recovery bond programs. 📈 The demand for seafood is on the rise, placing immense pressure on fish stocks and pushing many towards unsustainability. Traditional fisheries management has often fallen short in sustaining viable stocks or recovering depleted ones. 💡 Blue recovery bonds offer a solution by promoting the recovery and long-term sustainability of marine fish stocks through incentive-based resource management. 🌍 MFE evaluated 295 fisheries worldwide using the developed framework and the FishSource global dataset. The results identified 65 strong blue recovery bond candidates, primarily in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and South Pacific Oceans. 🔎 This work provided a robust initial understanding of how to assess fisheries for blue recovery bond candidacy. It underscored the importance of specific data and information streams in advancing efforts for fisheries recovery. 📧 For more insights or to access the full report, please contact MarFishEco at projects@marfisheco.com or view this project on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eMMwXfr9 François Mosnier, Planet Tracker, Jordan DiNardo, PhD #FisheriesManagement #Sustainability #BlueRecoveryBonds #MarineConservation #Innovation #MFE #MarFishEco #FisheriesConsultants #PlanetTracker

🐟 ISA’s latest fact-check focuses on the status of fishing activities in the Area, providing credible information on the work carried out so far to understand the potential overlap between fisheries activities in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) and future deep-sea mineral resource exploitation in the Area. ISA collaborates with international organizations, including FAO, and it is also developing binding environmental thresholds for pressures that might affect deep-sea fisheries. SFP & The Nature Conservancy convened a workshop in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, co-hosted by the Costa Rican Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (INOCOPESCA) and FEDENAP, a Costa Rican longliners' foundation, to lay the groundwork for effective electronic monitoring (EM) program design. The event marked the first time that a Central American government and fishing industry representatives have come together to discuss the issue. From SFP Global Policy Director Braddock Spear: "Building solid EM programs is not quick or easy. But, if done correctly from the beginning, the results can be powerful. The great work achieved in Costa Rica through industry-led EM trials and the recent adoption of EM standards by the IATTC [Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission] is setting the stage for positive momentum.” Read more in SeafoodSource ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/exxg4-V8
