🚨 BREAKING 🚨 EUDR Implementation: A Potential 1-Year Delay? It comes as a surprise, but the EU Commission has proposed a 1-year delay for the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) due to concerns raised by global stakeholders about the state of preparedness (European Commission Press Release, Oct 2, 2024). 🗓️ If approved by the European Parliament and the Council, the regulation will now apply on: - 30 December 2025 for large companies - 30 June 2026 for micro- and small enterprises For those in the EUDR compliance world, you can breathe a little easier—perhaps now you’ll finally get more sleep! 😴 But, don't get too comfy just yet—there’s still a lot to be done to gather information and set up a robust due diligence system. 🗒 UK REACH ATRm - Opportunities and Threats 🏭 Interesting read for a monday morning! Sue Bullock and Richard Bishop from TSG Consulting delve into the UK REACH consultation, highlighting key areas for industry input. ⚗ For reminder, the proposed Alternative Transitional Registration model (ATRm) aims to simplify compliance by focusing on risk rather than hazard data, as UK REACh is growing apart from its European counterpart. While promising, this shift requires detailed use and exposure data, complicating compliance for varied downstream uses. ⚠ A major concern is the divergence from EU hazard classifications, potentially hindering the use of EU data and complicating compliance (as the EU has years and years of valuable date to rely on). Unclear guidelines on using ECHA data and potential fees could also reduce cost savings. Additionally, reduced emphasis on hazard data might discourage collaboration, leading to administrative challenges. Despite these issues, Defra's ATRm is claimed to potentially cut registration costs by up to 70%, by offering a more efficient approach. Industry leaders must therefore engage in the (extended) consultation process until 25 July to influence these critical regulations. With the first post-Brexit registration deadline on 27 October 2026, now is the time to shape a safer, more efficient regulatory landscape for chemicals in Great Britain. Do you share these concerns? On October 2, the European Commission announced a proposal to delay the EUDR deadlines by one year. Although many players welcomed it positively, it came as a bit of a surprise, as there had been no prior indication or announcement of this over the past year from the institutions. Why was this delay proposed? ➡️Strong pressures and criticism from international stakeholders, being afraid that: 🔧 Operators, traders, and especially smallholders would struggle to meet the new Regulation's requirements due to its complexity and disruptive impact. 🚩 The potential downsides could outweigh the environmental benefits, as higher supply chain costs might lead to increased prices for consumers globally. ➡️ Tight implementation timeframe, since EUDR has provided only a little over 18 months for adaptation. ➡️ The unprecedented nature of the Regulation on a global scale, being the first legislation of its kind. While these reasons may be valid, delaying the EUDR also has significant consequences. What are they? 🪵 One more year of unregulated supply chain operations means that global businesses can continue to contribute to deforestation and forest degradation, leaving the world’s forests unprotected. 💰 Companies that were proactive and invested in EUDR compliance early now face a disadvantage compared to those who delayed action. 📉 The credibility of the EUDR and the EU Commission’s commitment to addressing global environmental challenges are now called into question. 🔍 We all need to closely monitor the upcoming developments to see whether the EU Parliament will approve the proposal or not. #EUDRCompliance #EUDRNews

🌎 EUDR Update: New Developments on the Deforestation Regulation Timeline 🌍 The European Union Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR), originally set to take effect in January 2025, has been postponed by 12 months. The EU Council yesterday announced an agreement to extend the application timeline after its initial publishing in early October, pushing the start date to December 2025, the new implementation dates are: 📅 30 December 2025 for large operators 📅 30 June 2026 for SMEs The extension still needs to be approved by the European Parliament, so stay tuned for final binding updates! This extension provides much-needed time for preparation for producer organizations worldwide that have been struggling to collect the needed geolocation data or conduct the necessary risk assessment. How does the revised guideline for environmental risk assessment affect you? The EMA has updated the scientific guideline for environmental risk assessment (ERA). It is mandatory to include an ERA in the MAA for a medicinal product for human use (HMP). This guideline outlines how to conduct an ERA and how to evaluate environmental risks from the use of the medicinal product. The ERA aims to protect aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, such as water and soil. It also includes species at risk of secondary poisoning and risks to the microbial processes in sewage treatment plants. The revised guideline is effective from 1 Sep 2024.
