September 5th is the International Day of Charity—a perfect time to give back while enriching your life in more ways than one! 🌟 For newcomers and those looking to settle in English-speaking countries, volunteering on this day is a fantastic way to connect with the local community, improve your English, and soak up the culture. Whether it’s helping out at a food bank, tutoring, or joining a community clean-up, these activities offer a win-win: you’re doing good while making new friends and learning in a fun, real-world setting. Volunteering is also a great way to boost your language skills! You'll get to practice English in everyday conversations, pick up on local slang, and learn about cultural traditions firsthand. Plus, there’s no better way to feel like you’re truly part of the community than by giving back. And you never know who you will meet for your future job! Take a page out of my client, Alecio’s book. He was a university Law Professor in Brazil and a newcomer to Canada. He had studied English for more that 2 years with me, finally moved to Vancouver for a better life with his wife in July 2024. He VOLUNTEERED at a festival in August and got a connection for job while attending college in September. Alecio is a perfect example of how anyone can give of their time and reap the benefits of helping others and helping himself at the same time – a WIN-WIN for everyone! So, why not step out tomorrow, lend a helping hand, and start living your best life when you’re in your new country? You’ll be doing good for others—and for yourself, too! 💪✨ Happy International Day of Charity! When I started volunteering as an ESOL teacher, I thought I’d be the one doing all the teaching. Turns out, this experience has been just as much about my learning as theirs. One lesson that really stuck with me was when I had to explain the U.S. court system to my students. What seemed straightforward at first quickly turned into a real challenge: How do you clearly and simply explain the difference between civil and criminal courts to someone still learning the language? It wasn’t just about the words—it was about breaking down complex ideas in a way that truly connected with them. And that’s when it hit me—this is exactly what I do in marketing. Whether it’s crafting a campaign or teaching a lesson, it’s all about knowing your audience, simplifying the message, and delivering it in a way that resonates. For my students, this meant using examples, visual aids, and even acting out scenarios (yes, I may have mimed a traffic violation or two!). Through volunteering, I’ve not only helped others, but I’ve also sharpened skills that are essential in my career. I’ve learned to communicate across cultural barriers, adapt messages for different audiences, and find creative ways to engage people—all key ingredients for successful marketing. This experience has been incredibly rewarding, not just because I get to see my students grow, but because I’ve grown alongside them. It’s amazing how giving back can give you so much in return. #Marketing #CommunicationSkills #ProfessionalGrowth
