Wow - this should be great! I've been learning about Donella Meadows, #degrowth and #doughnuteconomics through Terra.do's Climate fellowship program, where we are lucky to have Katy Shields as an instructor. Degrowth offers an alternative to continued economic growth - so that we don't gobble everything up and destroy ourselves. Described as a "radical theory" by the World Economic Forum, degrowth aims to stabilize economies in order to achieve socio-political equity and ecological sustainability. If you're interested in capitalism and the well-being of our planet, I highly recommend checking out this podcast. Get ideas, get inspired. P.S. Great to see OII alumnus James Williams on BBC Studios Radio 4's "Appetite for Distraction" programme, discussing the future of attention, persuasive design, and the wider implications of how big tech platforms manipulate our attention. "Attention is the essential phenomenon of will, and that will is the basis of democracy and politics, so if something is undermining our attention, it's therefore undermining human will," he says. The eight-part limited series delves into faith, patriotic fanaticism, and surveillance, inspired by stories from Cuba's notorious Comités de Defensa de la Revolución. 'Bistec' follows a longtime Cuban Revolutionary whose life unravels when a prominent dissident moves into his neighborhood, exposing secrets and testing loyalties. Set during the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution in 2009, it unveils the contemporary world of Cuba's enigmatic surveillance system within a compelling narrative filled with unexpected twists. 'Even though Bistec is rooted in Cuba, it is the story of MILLIONS of people who have no rights to privacy, and whose lives and very souls are subject to the whims of a Totalitarian state,' said series creator Manuel Ruiz-Barrera. The series boasts a talented cast, including actors, musicians, and producers with extensive credits. I’ve been listening into an insightful podcast called Real Dictators, which details Adolf Hitler’s ascent from an obscure soldier to the Fuhrer of Germany and the head of the Nazi party. It’s fascinating yet unsettling to see the parallels with figures like Trump and Farage. They both use tactics such as scapegoating immigrants for societal problems, delivering catchy populist slogans like ‘build a wall,’ manipulating democratic systems, and leveraging media to amass power. Understanding these historical events helps us identify and counteract similar threats today. While opinions on contemporary figures can vary, it’s important to critically examine their methods and rhetoric. We must stay vigilant to ensure we’re not fostering the rise of another tyrant.
