A recent study shows 9% of cholecystectomy procedures are performed robotically and offer better outcomes when compared to laparoscopy I thought the reference to Dr Maegawa’s study comparing robotic  with laparoscopic cholecystectomy was very interesting in the Intuitive call. This is a cohort  of 59,216 patients from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) for 2022. 5,470 of these were done robotically, The conclusion was that robotic cholecystectomy was independently associated with a lower risk of serious complications, lower rate conversion to open, and hospitalization ≥24 hours compared with laparoscopic cholecystectomy. However the rate of readmission and reoperation were not significantly different. This is very interesting as Cholecystecomies has been one of the areas where there has been the greatest push back to robotics being used due to perceived cost and lack of evidence on benefits. There are between 700,000 and 750,000 Choly procedures performed in the US every year. I would be surprised if 60,000 have been done robotically nationally. The big question is are these three improvements big enough to justify the cost variable. This I believe will be good news for the Versius team as CMR Surgical has just received their FDA approval for use with Cholecystectomies. Will they be able to show equivalent benefits at a lower price point to Da Vinci that could make their offering attractive.

Intuitive Surgical has once again demonstrated its market leadership with impressive Q3 2024 results. The company reported $2.04 billion in revenue, a 17% year-over-year increase, outperforming analyst expectations of $2 billion. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in strong at $1.84, significantly beating the forecast of $1.63. Key to this success was the continued growth in da Vinci robotic-assisted surgeries, with procedures increasing by 18% compared to the same period last year. The company also saw a surge in system placements, selling 379 da Vinci systems, including 110 units of the latest da Vinci 5, marking a notable jump from the 312 systems sold in Q3 2023. This quarter also marked a milestone for Intuitive Surgical’s installed base, which now totals 9,539 systems globally, reflecting a 15% growth year-over-year. The company is well-positioned financially, with its cash and equivalents reaching $8.31 billion, an increase of $628 million from the previous quarter. These results underscore Intuitive Surgical’s strong market demand and its successful execution of growth strategies, driven by innovation in robotic-assisted surgery and a focus on improving patient outcomes. As the healthcare landscape evolves, Intuitive Surgical remains a key player in transforming surgery.

Big News! Distalmotion's surgical robot Dexter won FDA de novo approval after treating more than 1,300 patients in Europe. It can work natively with third-party imaging systems and other devices, which will lead to easy integration to existing workflows.
