A historic event in the field of prosthetics and orthotics in Ukraine.
What happened?
In April 2023, Protez Hub gathered the first working group to work on the professional standard "Prosthetist-Orthotist", which included representatives of the domestic prosthetics and orthotics industry, representatives of ministries and higher education institutions, national professional associations, as well as representatives of ISPO (International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics) and ABC (American Board for Certification Prosthetics, Orthotics and Pedorthics). In less than six months, we have developed a professional standard - a 40-page document that takes into account all the requirements for determining the competencies of specialists of this level. The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has approved this profession as one of the regulated professions in the healthcare sector.
Since Ukraine already has specialists with extensive experience in the industry and the appropriate level of related higher education, it was decided to give them the opportunity to confirm their competencies in accordance with the new professional standard by completing a specialization course and passing theoretical and practical (clinical) exams with the participation of foreign prosthetists-orthotists who have experience in teaching and evaluation. This is the path the United States of America once took when they were establishing this profession, so we did not reinvent the wheel, but carefully studied the experience of our partners.
In cooperation with the Jönköping University and Kharkiv National Medical University, with the support of CF Patients of Ukraine, War Trauma Rehabilitation Project, Embassy of Switzerland in Ukraine, ProsthetiKa and the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics, Inc., the course was developed and the relevant exams were held.
Now, the first 14 practicing specialists have officially received confirmation that their knowledge and skills, combined with their experience and level of education, meet the requirements of the professional standard "Prosthetist-Orthotist".
In general, according to my estimation, there are about 40 such specialists in Ukraine today, and Protez Hub will continue to work with them both to confirm their qualifications and to create additional opportunities for these specialists to become industry leaders.
A HUGE thank you to our colleagues and partners! Without you this would not be possible!
