Finding ways to pay for Australia’s offshore wind industry. Low CO2 emissions and scalability make offshore wind a major opportunity to speed up the transition of Australia’s energy grid to renewable sources, says David Scrivener, #Westpac Institutional Bank’s Global Head of Energy, Infrastructure and Resources in The Australian Financial Review. Extraordinary collaboration between public and private sectors will be essential to turbo-charge the emerging offshore wind sector, although it’s starting to take shape. With international investors at the ready and developers already involved, Australia needs to look to more advanced overseas’ markets for cues on providing the right financial incentives. In many countries around the world, offshore wind is powering homes and communities, creating jobs and lowering emissions. The sector will be crucial to Australia’s future energy mix. Essential to securing that future is investor confidence enabled by stable and supportive policy settings. "Above all else, the success of Australia’s offshore wind industry will depend on certainty through strong policy and enduring political support, so investors can be confident that they are getting strong returns," Kane Thornton, Clean Energy Council Chief Executive, told the Financial Review this week. https://lnkd.in/drtRgNCx Offshore wind generates more energy for more hours of the day and is a perfect complement to onshore solar, wind and storage. We are working hard to drive coordination across the renewables industry to ensure the offshore wind sector takes off in Australia. No doubt many of you are digesting the results of the UK Government's sixth Contracts for Difference allocation round, which I wrote about earlier. Here's a snapshot of the reaction from offshore wind winners and others. Keith Anderson, CEO at ScottishPower (pictured left), which is a subsidiary of Iberdrola and is developing two of the winning projects, said: "Offshore wind is back on track after last year’s misstep which is great news for consumers... Now the Government and GB Energy should focus efforts on supporting new green technologies to unleash their potential, replicate offshore wind’s success and deliver on their ambition of making Britain a clean energy global superpower." Rasmus Errboe, deputy CEO and chief commercial officer at Ørsted (pictured middle), which is developing Hornsea 3 and 4, said: “We’re pleased with the outcome of allocation round 6, which is an important milestone for two of the world’s largest offshore wind farms. We look forward to delivering these landmark projects, which will supply renewable power at large scale to UK consumers and businesses and help the UK government achieve its target of quadrupling offshore wind capacity to 60 GW by 2030.” John Hill, project director at Inch Cape, which is a 50:50 joint venture between ESB and Red Rock Renewables, said: "The award of the CfD is an important milestone for the project as we continue to work closely with our key suppliers and stakeholders towards achieving financial close later this year." Stephen Bull OBE, CEO of Vårgrønn (pictured right), which is developing the 400MW Green Volt floating wind farm with Flotation Energy, said: “This award is a clear vote of confidence from the UK Government in our plans to build Europe’s first commercial scale floating offshore wind farm. It is fantastic news for both our project and the wider floating offshore wind sector.” Nicol Stephen, CEO of Flotation Energy, said: “Scotland is already a global pioneer in floating wind. This funding will kickstart the next phase of Europe’s largest floating wind project 80 km off the coast of Northeast Scotland.” Dan McGrail, CEO at trade association RenewableUK, said: "After the failure of last year’s offshore wind auction, it was essential that this auction succeeded and the fact that nine major offshore wind projects have secured contracts will increase investor confidence. There is intense global competition in offshore wind and the next auctions will be crucial for the UK." #offshorewind #onshorewind #floatingwind #solar #tidal A Word About Wind | Energy Storage Report | Tamarindo

Billions of pounds of investment opportunities and new jobs are expected to be created following the approval of one of the world's biggest floating offshore wind projects, Green Volt ✅ Europe's first commercial-scale floating windfarm, located off the Aberdeenshire coast, is a 50-50 joint venture between Aberdeen-based Flotation Energy and Norwegian firm Vårgrønn. Sir Ian Wood, Chair of the Energy Transition Zone (ETZ) said: “The awarding of consent for the Green Volt INTOG project is a massive boost for Scotland’s ambition to be a global leader in floating offshore wind. “This decision will unlock around £3 billion of investment, generate hundreds of jobs and will effectively result in Europe’s first commercial scale floating wind development. #ScotlandIsNow #EnergyTransition https://ow.ly/JZ9b50RlfQO

A Westwood Global Energy Group survey has revealed that accelerated investment, regulation and supply chain coordination is needed if the offshore wind sector is to meet its ambitious targets. The research, developed in partnership with Norwegian Offshore Wind and WORLD FORUM OFFSHORE WIND (WFO), surveyed 184 floating offshore wind stakeholders on industry sentiment and attitudes across the value chain. The survey revealed a lack of standardisation of floating technology (55 per cent), manufacturing capability and capacity (51 per cent) and port infrastructure (50 per cent) as the most cited major hurdles and risks to progress for floating offshore. China has become a significant investor and operator of renewable energy projects in Scotland, especially in offshore wind. Red Rock Power, a unit of SDIC Power, a state-controlled energy company based in Beijing, owns 25 per cent of the entity that has since 2019 operated the Beatrice wind farm off Caithness (SSE Renewables owns 40 per cent). Beatrice is one of the largest ever private investments in Scottish infrastructure (at £2.6 billion) and one of Scotland's single largest sources of renewable energy. Now, some of China leading companies in the wind turbine business - including Mingyang Smart Energy - are eyeing opportunities in the offshore wind supply chain in Scotland. But as I write in this The Scotsman column, issues of energy security and trade competitiveness may start to encroach. #China #Scotland #renewables #offshorewind https://lnkd.in/eA6zGD-A

Thank you to the Commonwealth Government of Australia for selecting BlueFloat Energy’s Gippsland Dawn project in the Feasibility License tender in Gippsland (Victoria)!!! If we are formally awarded a Feasibility License following the upcoming consultation with Traditional Owners, this will be a major event for BlueFloat Energy: 1) It would consolidate our presence in Australia, a market where we were one of the first developers to enter more than 3 years ago. We always believed in the strong potential of the Aussie offshore market!!! 2) It would be our third consecutive successful competitive tender following @Scotwind (3 licenses awarded) and INTOG (2 licenses awarded), both in Scotland. That makes a 100% success rate so far!!! 3) Gippsland Dawn would be our first fixed-bottom project to secure exclusive seabed lease. Yes, BlueFloat Energy does fixed-bottom too!!! 4) It would be the first project we secure with a 100% ownership, consolidating our position as a top tier developer!!! I could not be prouder of the amazing people that constitute our Dream Team. An amazing group of experienced professionals working as a global team with the shared purpose of contributing to decarbonizing our world. More good news to come soon… #Offshorewind #Australia #Gippsland #Renewablenergy #Energytransition #Sustainability
📣 BlueFloat Energy is pleased our application is progressing well for an offshore wind feasibility licence off the coast of Gippsland, Victoria.
