#Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (#HPBCD) is a chemically modified derivative of beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD). It is widely used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other industries due to its enhanced solubility and biocompatibility. Structure Core: Derived from β-cyclodextrin, which consists of seven glucose units linked by α-1,4-glycosidic bonds, forming a toroidal (doughnut-shaped) structure. Modification: Hydroxypropyl groups (-CH₂CHOHCH₃) are attached to the hydroxyl groups of the glucose units, making the molecule more hydrophilic and increasing its solubility in water. Properties Improved Solubility: HPBCD is significantly more water-soluble than native β-cyclodextrin. Biodegradability: Like other cyclodextrins, it is biodegradable and non-toxic. Hydrophilic Exterior: The hydroxypropyl modifications enhance interactions with aqueous environments. Hydrophobic Cavity: Retains the hydrophobic cavity characteristic of cyclodextrins, allowing encapsulation of poorly soluble molecules. Reduced Crystallization: HPBCD reduces the crystallization of guest molecules compared to unmodified β-CD. Applications Pharmaceuticals: Used as a drug carrier to improve the solubility, stability, and bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs. Applications include formulations for oral, injectable, and topical use. Food Industry: Stabilizes flavors, removes unwanted compounds, and improves the solubility of additives. Cosmetics: Stabilizes active ingredients, masks odors, and enhances the solubility of fragrances and other compounds. Environmental Science: Used for removing organic pollutants from water.
