Why do we need swarm based orchestration of data and AI processing in our cities ? I tried to answer that question on the closing conference of the #DECIDO project. Thank you for the opportunity to share #HIRO’s vision on smart cities.
📣 Last February in Brussels, the ACES project was featured in a demonstration session hosted by Hiro Microdatacenters during the Final Conference of “DECIDO: Shaping the Future of Evidence-Informed Policy Making". The conference presented the results of the #DECIDO #H2020 project and also featured a session on bridging #innovations and #exploitation, culminating in a discussion with representatives from other #EUprojects within the DECIDO Horizon #EuropeCommunity. Yesterday, the RHC published a report on the future regulation of #space technologies. The Council identified 11 technologies which will shape our future in space and set out 40 recommendations for government. 🚀 The report highlights three key themes: 1. Space regulation is mostly ‘missing in action’ whilst technologies are racing ahead. 2. Given the range and scale of activities likely to take place in space over the next 10 – 20 years, we will need to develop and mature our regulatory approaches both internationally and domestically. 3. Trends towards the increasing militarisation and commercialisation of space could increase the potential for future conflict, and lead to the degradation and misuse of the space environment. Click below to access the full report and its insights aimed at protecting the space environment, maintaining peace in space, and ensuring its equitable use ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e2QkV2qM With thanks to RAND Europe who undertook a horizon scan into the intersection of emerging technologies with the space domain as part of this project. Their analysis is available here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eCkKcN-H We’re also grateful for techUK’s Space Commercialisation and Tech summit and the London Space Finance Seminar for giving Council member Dr Lucy Mason a platform to speak about the report during its launch. 🛰️ #Innovation #Regulation #Spacetech

As 2024 comes to a close, we’re proud to reflect on the critical role SCOSS has played in connecting essential open infrastructure resources to funding and creating a space for collaboration and support. This year, thanks to your pledges, we’ve made meaningful, sustainable progress. 🌐 As of 2024, over 345 institutions have pledged support for SCOSS-endorsed, noncommercial, Open Science infrastructure, raising over 6.4M Euro for 15 infrastructures. 🎉 We welcomed Research Data Alliance, a global leader in data standards and community building, and Software Heritage, the world’s largest software code repository, to the SCOSS Family. ✨Advancing 3rd & 4th Pledging Rounds: arXiv, #DSpace, Sistema de Información Científica Redalyc, Red de Revistas Científicas, Dryad, ROR - Research Organization Registry Read more here: https://lnkd.in/erTfQ4iz. However, SCOSS faces a challenge. Most infrastructures did not reach their full funding targets. The past 12 months have seen a decline in funding, while the need for sustained support has never been more critical. To address this, the SCOSS Board launched a strategy to engage library consortia and research funders across previously untapped geographic and sectoral areas. ⚙️ The SCOSS Family Community of Practice brings together organizations to collaborate, innovate, and learn from one another. Current efforts focus on operational and service-level collaborations, with key priorities including fundraising capacity and related areas like marketing, sales, and communications. On the service front, metadata interoperability and process improvement have been identified as critical needs. 💡 The newly launched SCOSS Directors' Network provides a dedicated space for infrastructure leaders to address shared challenges, exchange knowledge, and foster strategic collaboration. 📣 Lastly, the Communications Group meets regularly to exchange ideas and share expertise, strengthening advocacy efforts and amplifying the collective voice of SCOSS-endorsed infrastructures. Looking ahead to 2025, we’re excited to introduce the next set of SCOSS-endorsed infrastructures for Pledging Round 6: 🔹AFRICAN JOURNALS ONLINE (RF) 🔹Episciences at CCSD - Centre for direct scientific communication 🔹Make Data Count 🔹SciPost These established services address concrete needs and rely on community support to innovate, expand globally, and ensure long-term sustainability. They need your support. 👏 Join us in sustaining Open Science! Your support is essential — not only for the success of SCOSS’s 3-year campaigns but for the long-term sustainability of open infrastructure. These are the vital resources that your researchers, students, and staff rely on daily. If you have any funds left at the end of the year and are looking for a good cause to invest in, no need to look any further as some of our infrastructures are still trying to reach their targets. Find out how to pledge here: https://lnkd.in/ekACgk7b.

Marginal Cost of Computation as a Collaborative Strategy for Resource Management at the Edge” 📄, from the IIT-CNR team in EDGELESS, has been selected as the best paper 🏆 at the 20th International Conference on the Economics of Grids, Clouds, Systems, and Services (GECON 2024) 🌍, which was held in Rome 🇮🇹 last September. Co-authors: Emanuele Carlini, Patrizio Dazzi, Luca Ferrucci, Jacopo Massa, and Matteo Mordacchini. The paper introduces a decentralized resource management strategy for edge computing environments, leveraging the Marginal Computing Cost per User (MCU) 💻, a concept adapted from economic sciences 📊. By calculating MCU based on local resource usage, load, and user demand, edge nodes can autonomously decide whether to process or offload computation requests to neighboring nodes 🔄. This decentralized approach optimizes resource utilization while preventing overload on individual nodes ⚖️. Such an autonomous collaboration and load balancing among edge nodes aligns well with the EDGELESS project’s objectives: (i) horizontally pooling resources to enable task sharing among edge nodes based on availability 🔗, and (ii) leveraging diverse and decentralized computational resources by allowing heterogeneous edge nodes to autonomously and dynamically assess their capacity to handle additional tasks 🔧. #EDGELESS #GECON2024 #EdgeComputing #ResourceManagement #DecentralizedSystems

Today, I have written in BusinessCloud about how the new #Labourgoverment can best support the future of the #UKSpaceSector. “…In recent years, UK space technologies have experienced remarkable growth, contributing an impressive £16.5 billion to the economy back in 2019/2020.” “…By reducing regulatory red tape and streamlining processes, Labour can furthermore support better development of new technologies and garner further private-sector investment.” https://lnkd.in/eK3Zq4bx
