Preserving BC First Nations' food traditions is more than a passion; it's a mission to keep our rich cultural heritage alive. Jared "Qwustenuxun" Williams is at the forefront of this crucial endeavor, blending tradition with innovation by upgrading his smokehouse to include a commercial-quality kitchen. This significant step allows him to meet modern food safety standards while maintaining ancient food preservation techniques. Thanks to the Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty Grant, Jared's vision is becoming a reality. This fund, aimed at strengthening Indigenous food systems and sovereignty, provided Jared with the necessary resources to break ground on a project that not only serves his community but also sets a precedent for sustainability and cultural preservation. Jared's long-term goal? To establish regulations that enable other First Nations to replicate this model, ensuring that traditional foodways not only survive but thrive. By providing dried fish to hospitals and elders, Jared is creating a blueprint for future generations to sustainably share and enjoy the bounty of their land. Let's celebrate the fusion of tradition and innovation, as we watch Jared pave the way for a future where BC First Nations' food traditions are not only remembered but actively integrated into our communities. #FoodSovereignty #IndigenousInnovation #bcfirstnations

With New Relationship Trust we are focusing on capturing impact stories for their programs, but especially the Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty Grant. By creating a series that highlights the incredible journeys of grant recipients, we're not just sharing success stories; we're painting a picture of possibility. These narratives are powerful — they allow our audience to envision themselves embarking on similar impactful ventures, applying this crucial grant towards their own initiatives. Showcasing real-life examples is key. It's not just about telling; it's about showing. It's about making the potential tangible. When people can see themselves in the stories we share, the likelihood of them stepping forward to apply and make their own mark increases significantly.

This is a great resource released by the AFPC! Food hubs can act as central facilities, or "hubs," for aggregation, processing, storage, distribution, and marketing for food producers. This type of infrastructure is much needed in Alaska, and as we work to build interconnectivity across existing food hubs, it's also critical to identify immediate barriers for those aspiring to establish their own in their communities.
Latest resource just in from the Alaska Food Policy Council! Food Hubs are on the rise but what are they? How to they impact local food systems? How do they operate? It's all here. "Six 'food hubs' in Alaska collaborated with the Alaska Food Policy Council in a project funded by the USDA Local Foods Promotion Program to explore how to forge a stronger, more resilient network over time. These hubs are located in Kodiak, Homer, Juneau, and Anchorage." https://shorturl.at/dlsR9
