📈 Gothenburg is solidifying its position as an innovation powerhouse, with business R&D expenditure growing significantly. During 2023 businesses in Gothenburg’s county, Västra Götaland, invested SEK 58.6 billion in R&D. This is over SEK 9 billion more than in any other Swedish county. 💡 In terms of R&D intensity, Gothenburg’s county stands out. Business R&D expenditure amounts to 5.6% of the gross regional product – more than twice as much as in Stockholm County and Sweden as a whole. “These figures reflect Gothenburg companies’ strong willingness to invest and their ability to increase knowledge content at every stage leading up to the final delivery to the customer. There is high global demand for the products, services, and processes developed by export companies in the region. They are essentially driving Swedish growth and are increasingly doing so from here,” says Patrik Andersson, CEO at Business Region Göteborg. 👉 Next week, Business Region Göteborg will present a report that provides a deeper analysis of the above developments: Business R&D in West Sweden. Our team recently completed an incredible journey across Sweden, visiting key cities like Stockholm, Karlstad, Gothenburg, and Malmö. 🇸🇪 It wasn’t just about the kilometers traveled—2210 km to be exact—but about the relationships built and the valuable insights gained from 53 face-to-face meetings. 🤝 A few key takeaways: 🔷 Swedish companies thrive within interconnected ecosystems and are passionate about maintaining entrepreneurial spirit. 🔷Traditional methods can sometimes outperform new trends in sales and visibility. 🔷Nothing beats the power of in-person connections to grow visibility and foster long-term relationships. From 6 camping areas and 27 Uber trips, to sharing 12 kg of chocolate and gifting 150 boxes, it was an unforgettable journey that reminded us of the importance of flexibility, teamwork, and the value of personal connections in business.👐 We’re excited to put these lessons into action and continue building strong partnerships in Sweden and beyond!💜 #TourdeSweden #WorkWonders Mikko Virtanen Jussi Tenho Jan Eriksson

Lately, I've found myself traveling quite a bit across Germany, especially through regions in the former East. It got me thinking about the similarities between managing large corporations and running cities. Take Rostock, for example—a port city competing with Western giants like Hamburg and Bremen. On paper, it might seem like an unfair fight, but Rostock is playing the long game. The city nurtures three universities, bringing in educators from Berlin, Hamburg, and Bremen. These professors may teach and return, but some students will stay, becoming the next generation of talent. In summer, the city comes alive with cruise ships pouring thousands of tourists into its historic streets, dating back to medieval times, and its stunning beaches. Rostock's long-term strategy is one built on vision—and that’s something corporations can relate to. But like any city, it also has to provide everyday services and maintain infrastructure. The key difference is that those responsible for maintenance and those tasked with planning the future aren't always cut from the same material. The same holds true for large corporations. To thrive in the long run, you need a visionary who can steer the ship toward the future. But you also need a "Scotty" in the engine room, keeping the ship running smoothly. Both roles are essential for sustainable success. #leadership #innovation #transformation
