📈 Gothenburg is solidifying its position as an innovation powerhouse, with business R&D expenditure growing significantly. During 2023 businesses in Gothenburg’s county, Västra Götaland, invested SEK 58.6 billion in R&D. This is over SEK 9 billion more than in any other Swedish county. 💡 In terms of R&D intensity, Gothenburg’s county stands out. Business R&D expenditure amounts to 5.6% of the gross regional product – more than twice as much as in Stockholm County and Sweden as a whole. “These figures reflect Gothenburg companies’ strong willingness to invest and their ability to increase knowledge content at every stage leading up to the final delivery to the customer. There is high global demand for the products, services, and processes developed by export companies in the region. They are essentially driving Swedish growth and are increasingly doing so from here,” says Patrik Andersson, CEO at Business Region Göteborg. 👉 Next week, Business Region Göteborg will present a report that provides a deeper analysis of the above developments: Business R&D in West Sweden. CANEAs headquarters reside in Gothenburg, and as we tell the story of our HQ, it's time to delve into the rich history of Gothenburg, a city known for its vibrant culture and historical significance. Gothenburg, founded in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, is located on the west coast of Sweden. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Göta River made it an important trading hub from its inception. In its early years, Gothenburg was heavily influenced by Dutch merchants and engineers who were instrumental in designing the city's canals and urban layout, giving it a distinct character compared to other Swedish cities. The city's fortifications, built to protect against potential invasions, played a crucial role in its defense and development. The 18th and 19th centuries marked significant growth for Gothenburg, as it became a key center for shipbuilding and trade. The establishment of the Swedish East India Company in 1731 further cemented Gothenburg’s status as a vital trading port, facilitating commerce with Asia and beyond. Industrialization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries transformed Gothenburg into an industrial powerhouse. Major companies, including Volvo and SKF, were founded here, contributing to the city's economic prosperity and global reputation. Gothenburg celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2021, marking four centuries of rich history and development. Today, Gothenburg is celebrated for its blend of historical charm and modern innovation. The city boasts numerous cultural attractions, including the Gothenburg Opera, Liseberg amusement park, and the annual Gothenburg Film Festival, reflecting its dynamic and diverse cultural scene. As Gothenburg moves forward, it continues to honor its historical roots while embracing a future of sustainability and innovation. Gothenburg is growing.
What has happened since last week? Well, Gothenburg has grown. A few meters taller. And wider. And deeper. 🏙 Instead of seeing problems with a dug-up city (which can definitely be a pain😧), I see all the opportunities in what's to come. Space for more people, more successful businesses, more innovations, and more fun things happening. Here are some of the latest: ✔New ferry connection between downtown and the expanding Lindholmen, more info at Västtrafik ✔New and improved water connection northward (or at least a decision that it will be😊) something so cool that I can barely understand myself… a triangular lock in Lilla Edet. Great for sustainable transportation, great for business, and great for tourism—the holy trinity! More info at Business Region Göteborgs ✔A new district around the Central Station is now approved with the detailed plan finalized ✔And finally, we welcome Syntio to Gothenburg! This fast-growing engineering company from Croatia has established itself at Lindholmen (oh, lucky that there are now two ferry lines to choose from downtown!) More info at Invest in Gothenburg Almost forgot, perhaps the most important: Spring has finally arrived, the scent of bird cherry fills the air, and I've picked my first lily of the valley! Do you have any fun things or news to add to the list? #gothenburg #göteborg
