Decision making VS exponential technologies. In today's rapidly evolving #AI landscape, long-term planning can seem daunting. The best long-term decision is usually to assume that you will likely have to change your decision in the short term. Take one leap at a time in the right direction without expecting it to be the last leap. In an exponentially changing environment, you have to be prepared to change at the same speed, and with it your decisions, your architectures, your technology. Permanent decisions are a thing of the past. Analysis paralysis is the biggest danger for a CTO or technology decision-maker today. This is a game: the great game of building the future while we adapt to it ;) My advice: 1. Embrace uncertainty: The best long-term strategy is often acknowledging that short-term pivots are inevitable. 2. Take calculated risks: Make bold moves in the right direction, but don't expect them to be your final destination. 3. Stay adaptable: View each decision as a stepping stone, not a permanent solution. 4. Learn continuously: Use each 'leap' as an opportunity to gather insights and refine your approach. If you're developing a new AI program, by analyzing past projects, you can estimate the success rate – let's say 70%. Now, the traditional approach might focus solely on maximizing that 70%. But the power of predictability goes a step further. It allows you to anticipate the remaining 30%. The TOM ensures that business and IT go hand in hand in all functions and areas. “Every company facing change and transformation should have a Target Operating Model (TOM). It is the ideal model and tool to develop a common language and vision. It serves as the unifying element shared by the supervisory board or advisory board, management, IT management, and relevant IT governance functions.” In the book "IT & Digital for Supervisory Boards and Advisory Boards" Karl-Heinz Schulte and Daniela Hellwig introduce the IT TOM with these words. Their practical experience shows: such a model is the crucial lever to bring all stakeholders together for an IT-driven initiative. It is the decisive step towards a blueprint for a new, business- and future-oriented IT. What does an IT TOM typically define? 🔹 What vision and mission are we pursuing with the IT restructuring? 🔹 What IT management functions do we need? 🔹 What is our service model? Where can we centralize? 🔹 What does our sourcing model look like? Make-or-buy? 🔹 What IT security strategy are we pursuing? 🔹 What does the roadmap look like for translating the transformation initiative into practice? … A brief excerpt.
