Looking at my son and my father (with an age gap of almost 60 years!) equally supercharged about today’s match, I am getting more and more convinced about the power of sports. It has transformed not only humans but entire cities! Would like to share a story that I learnt last year during my trip to Barcelona. Till the late 1980s, Barcelona was a beautiful yet often overlooked place amongst major cities in Europe. But winning the bid to host the 1992 Olympics changed its fortune forever. It grabbed the opportunity to reinvent itself and went all out. The city didn’t just build sports venues; it went for a massive-scale infrastructure makeover. New roads, an expanded metro system, and efficient public transport came up almost overnight. Today, Barcelona’s public transportation system is one of the most efficient in Europe, with the metro network alone carrying around 420 million passengers annually! Barcelona’s industrial waterfront was converted from an underused space to a place full of stunning beaches, parks, and public areas. Today, over 7 million tourists visit Barcelona’s beaches every year and enjoy the city’s amazing vibe. All this brought Barcelona on the global stage. Tourists rushed in, local businesses thrived, and the city’s reputation soared. In the first year after the Olympics, tourism increased by 110%, and today, Barcelona ranks among the top 10 most visited cities in the world, with over 12 million visitors annually. As we gear up to watch today’s match, let’s think about the magic of sports. What if our cities could capture some of that Barcelona spirit? What if we could use big events to spark our own urban transformations? The morning programme Good Morning America, the most watched morning show in America, was broadcast from Portugal on June 20, featuring all the Portuguese gems, from the Algarve to Porto. 🌴 The programme described Portugal as “one of the most affordable places to visit in Europe” and highlighted that “more than 2 million Americans take advantage of that fact every year”. In her introduction of the programme, show host Robin Roberts stated that there were “so many things to see and do here”, with over 2 million Americans visiting Portugal in 2023 alone. From the architecture to natural beauty, the programme explores why Americans are choosing Portugal “in record numbers”. According to Brian Kelly, one of the commentators on the show, “Portugal is a top destination because it has it all, from beaches to city excursions to wine country, plus it’s affordable. And to top it all off, it’s the third safest country in the world”. Since 2014 when I first launched the international event #smartravel (www.smartravel.pt) In a small city in the inland of Portugal with 35,000 inhabitants, my hometown Bragança, many people have been saying (or thinking) what a crazy idea that was. But we were able to gather around 400 people for 4 days and almost 70 top international speakers connecting Smart Tourism and Smart Cities for the first time in one event. Besides the Tech tools and innovations, the topics were circling strategy, authenticity, acceptance, and creativeness. For the first time, we were able to create art in the street without artists being arrested or fined. Even though a lot of curious people who didn't know Artur Bordalo (Aka Bordalo II) were finding strange the amount of "garbage" on the sidewalk. Here's the video we made in 2014 that illustrates the amazing work of amazing artists Bordalo II and Zabou.
