DID YOU KNOW? 🤔 Despite the feeling that bookmakers dominate TV, a survey by Tunad, a platform specialising in monitoring advertising campaigns, revealed that only 2.9% of ads on Brazilian free-to-air channels are for sports betting, with the peak in April during the start of the Brazilian Championship. In the other months, the percentage was no more than 2.7 per cent. During sporting events, the influence of bets increases significantly, reaching 20 per cent of breaks in May. We won 18 medals! No, I am not talking about the Olympics or Asian Games. I am talking about the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity or ‘Oscars of the ad world’. It has taken India decades to get its creative spirits acknowledged and these 18 medals; 2 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze won by agencies like McCann World Group, Leo Burnett, Early Man Film, and Ogilvy are a testament to how far our creative industry has come. Though this number is the lowest since 2019, I still feel we gave some pretty awesome campaigns this year. Here are some that I loved: 🥉 Dabba Savings Account: This ad by ESAF Small Finance Bank and McCann India won a Bronze and honestly, it is one of my favorites. ESAF customized a part of a ‘dabba’ for women to secretly hide their savings and while distributing these dabbas, they opened accounts for them. They partnered with shopkeepers to use biometrics and directly use money from their accounts just like an ATM to pay for commodities like rice. 🥈 Be Free To Pee: This ad by Harpic and Tgthr won a silver in the Lions for Change category. Harpic introduced a crowdsourced app called the ‘Loocater; where women could locate and rate a public toilet. 🥇 Gatorade Turf Finder: This ad by Gatorade and Leo Burnett won a Gold and it truly deserves so. They gathered years of traffic data to understand which areas/grounds/roads in different cities stay vacant and converted those areas into playing turfs. Brilliant, isn't it? I always feel that creativity is not just about a brilliant idea, it is about how we can create an impact through that idea. How we can actually create a difference in the lives of people by bringing out ideas that can change the world. And these ads did more than just creative work! Kudos to all the winners and India!
