Today is International Men’s Day! The day celebrates the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities, and raises awareness of men’s well-being. This year’s theme is ‘Positive male role models’ and to support it we asked members of our Presidential team - Kelly Nicoll CFIOSH, Richard Bate (IOSH President Elect - CFIOSH FIIRSM PMASSP), Michelle Stonley CFIOSH SIIRSM and Gary Latta, PhD, CFIOSH, CMgr FCMI who their inspirational male role models are. Here’s to the men in all our lives that are role models - kind, generous with their time and energy, are supportive cheerleaders. Those who volunteer, give their time to others to teach, mentor and coach. Those who allow us to be safe and secure with them and who step up to take care of the people around them.
It’s nice to share I believe role models like this and my own Dad should be recognised not just farthers day as some are not dads but still need that touch shining for them as without them the international and local communities would be worse off, so here is to sung and unsung men who just want to help.
Really inspiring post. I am fortunate to have so many positive male role models in my life, my Dad, brother, sons all inspire me in different ways. I was inspired as a young boy by the account of incredible leadership, courage and perseverance of the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton. I love the quote from Raymond Priestley ‘for scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton.’ As a young man I joined the Royal Army Medical Corp (RAMC) and had the privilege to serve alongside some of kindest most courageous men you could hope for in some very challenging environments. The motto of the RAMC is ‘In Arduis Fidelis’ which is Latin for "Faithful in Adversity" a motto I very much continue to live by today.
Cheers to all hardworking men out there
Role model my dad - he brought his kids up I’m one of four to be independent and work hard - he is an ex coal miner he worked hard even during strike he only thought of his wife and kids, keeping a roof over our heads - he’s shown us how proud he is of all his kids in everything we have done as adults - unfortunately he’s got Parkinson’s and Dementia but us still going strong I think determination is his middle name
Happy International Men’s Day to all the amazing men out there!
Thank you for sharing who your inspirational male role models are on International Men’s Day. We’ve loved reading your stories ❤️
Félicitations !
It’s not often we get a shout out. This is nice. Men suffer the majority of workplace fatalities. Men have sacrificed themselves for millennia for family, country, and work. We’d have no civilisation without good strong men. Here’s to all the men who conduct themselves as men should 👍🍻 (-> in the spirit of voluntary self-sacrifice).
