California is taking aim at ultra-processed foods. On Jan. 3, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order calling on state agencies to recommend potential actions to limit the harms associated with ultra-processed foods and food ingredients that present health risks to consumers. One action mentioned in the order: put warning labels on products identified as ultra-processed and sold in California. Food Business News Editor Keith Nunes has the story. Thanks Keith, for offering your perspective on this important topic. As you point out, "Research conducted by Innova Market Insights showed consumer concern about ultra-processed foods comes, in part, from consumers believing the products are under-regulated." "Yet nothing could be further from the truth. All aspects of food manufacturing are highly regulated. The real issue is a lack of understanding about what constitutes ultra-processed food and the challenges of trying to differentiate and regulate such products. Executive orders and potential legislative efforts that do not take this into account are irresponsible." Let's hope cooler heads prevail in California. #bakingindustry #ultraprocessedfoods

This is something I didn’t know before reading this article: “ Sampling of the production environment for Listeria after four to six hours of production is an important consideration. The FSIS allows production runs as high as 60 hours before completing clean breaks. In facilities with known Listeria harborage issue, this is an extremely risky proposition. The odds of product contamination rise over time, and the risk of large recalls can result. “
I would like to share this about Listeria in the Food Processing Plants. I hope you find it helpful. Let me know. https://ow.ly/oC5C50UqCKl

Here are some updates from the FDA and USDA FSIS for food processors and manufacturers: FDA's New Moves: They're rolling out guidance on safe levels of lead, arsenic, and cadmium in kids' food, clarifying labels for plant-based foods, and boosting food traceability to tackle outbreaks faster. USDA FSIS Alert: Salmonella is now officially an adulterant in raw breaded stuffed chicken if it hits certain levels. Keep an eye on hot topics like PFAS in packaging, food additive bans, and the avian flu's impact on the dairy industry. Navigating these changes can be tricky, but partnering with experts in product contamination coverage, like Gallagher, can help protect your business and keep your consumers safe. Let me know if you have any questions.
