All schools across Australia should make it mandatory to learn CPR and AED skills. And First Aid training should be mandatory for everyone getting a drivers and boat licence - "Every day in Victoria, 20 people will suffer a cardiac arrest and only one in 10 survive." We can improve the chances of survival with more people learning #CallPushShock (chain of survival) - "Every minute counts in a cardiac arrest and when a patient receives CPR and a shock from an AED before paramedics arrive, their chance of survival more than doubles." How has Mercy Air transformed emergency medical services over the past 35 years?  On December 14, Mercy Air (Air Methods) celebrated 35 years of providing critical air medical care throughout Nevada and California. The celebration took place at Apple Valley Airport and was attended by first responders, partners, and requestors. The event also saw a heartwarming reunion between former pediatric patient Luke Haas and the air medical team that helped save his life over two years ago.  Luke Haas, who suffered a serious spinal cord injury from a bike accident in 2022, was flown by Mercy Air to a trauma hospital, where he was diagnosed with significant spinal injuries. Despite the odds, Luke, now 15, continues to show remarkable strength and resilience. His mother, Sommer Haas, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the flight paramedic Ken Sexton and flight nurse Michael Lentz, who were part of the life-saving team.  Mercy Air operates across several locations in Nevada and California, with bases in Victorville, Hesperia, Barstow, and Big Bear. The program remains a critical part of the healthcare system, responding to 911 calls, requests from first responders, and interfacility transfers. The highly trained flight crews are equipped to provide advanced care, even administering blood during flights to improve patient outcomes.  Apple Valley Fire Protection Capt. Mark (Hoss) Milson praised the program’s strong partnerships with local agencies, adding that the 35th-anniversary celebration was a great way to recognize Mercy Air’s continued success in the region.  What role do you think community partnerships play in the success of air medical programs like Mercy Air? The challenges of emergency medicine can seem daunting, but firefighter/paramedic Kevin Freier shares advice for new medics: being a good paramedic does not mean being perfect. "As anyone who's worked in EMS for more than five minutes knows, there is nothing perfect about this job," he said. "Stay the course, keep pushing forward, and have faith in yourself." It takes a whole team and they all are frequently exposed to traumatic events, which puts them at risk of experiencing secondary trauma, also known as secondary traumatic stress. This happens when individuals who help those in distress are affected by the trauma experienced by those they are assisting.
