Today I celebrate the start of my 44th year as as member of The Florida Bar. To honor this day and express my appreciation to a profession that has been very good to me, and my family, I will do a give-away soon to all of my fellow sisters and brothers in the Florida Bar, no matter where you may live. Hint - to keep your membership in good standing you have to meet your CLE requirements, which are pretty heavy and can be very expensive. https://lnkd.in/eeuUtiGH

In this post, we delve into the origins of the society, its impact on local law enforcement, and the importance of collective action in confronting crime during a time when such issues deeply affected rural communities. Another great article posted by the Director of Second Look Network at The Sentencing Project regarding use of clemency powers to address excessive sentences. The number of older people in State & Federal prisons is increasing faster than any other age group. How could anyone claim that the point of incarceration was to incapacitate the truly dangerous when there are more people older than 55 in US prisons (165,000) than there are people in the high-crime range of 18-24? Geriatric healthcare in prison is both disgraceful and expensive. It costs on average, 3x more to incarcerate an older person than a younger one. Governor Andy Beshear could help alleviate the excessive costs mass incarceration has incurred on Kentucky as a proponent for second chances, and providing additional resources to protect public education and access to affordable healthcare-basic rights to the citizens of the Commonwealth. #SecondLookLaws #FreeKarenBrown
What an incredibly bold and inclusive way for a Governor to use clemency powers to address excessive sentences. Read New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's clemency initiative at: https://lnkd.in/eXHPEwdj Governor Murphy's statement: “Today on Juneteenth, a day that celebrates freedom, I am incredibly proud to launch a historic clemency initiative. I’m committed to using my powers as Governor to pardon and commute sentences to address injustices and overly harsh sentences in our criminal justice system. Thank you @ltgovway, @pastor_rls, @meekmill, and @wallo267 of @reform, Amol Sinha of the @aclunj, Justin Dews, and everyone who joined us in Newark today in support of second chances and the values of justice, compassion, and rehabilitation."

Geriatric healthcare in prison is both disgraceful and expensive. It costs on average, 3x more to incarcerate an older person than a younger one. National survey data according to the Prison Policy Initiative show that most victims support violence prevention, social investment, and alternatives to incarceration that address the root causes of crime, not more investment in carceral systems that cause more harm. Governor Andy Beshear could help alleviate the excessive costs mass incarceration has incurred on Kentucky as a proponent for second chances, and providing additional resources to protect public education and access to affordable healthcare-basic rights to the citizens of the Commonwealth. #SecondLookLaws #KyFreeKarenBrown

We don't need the BOP it is diluting resources from local prisons and neither does the job they are pretending to do. The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and its impact on local correctional facilities. We need to advocate for a decentralized approach, where local prisons may better serve communities without the administrative and resource burdens associated with a federal system. Resource Allocation: If the BOP's existence and operations are indeed diverting crucial resources from local correctional facilities, redirecting funds and responsibilities could strengthen the capacity of local systems to address community-specific needs. Efficiency and Effectiveness: Many argue that federal oversight often leads to inefficiencies or one-size-fits-all solutions that don't align with local realities. Disbanding or restructuring the BOP could allow for more tailored and effective prison management. Rehabilitation vs. Incarceration: Both federal and local prisons often fall short in rehabilitating inmates. Perhaps resources could be better used in community-based programs, diversion initiatives, or improved rehabilitation efforts. Policy Implications: Such a shift would have significant implications for sentencing laws, jurisdictional authority, and the management of federal prisoners currently housed in state facilities.
