Today, April 26, is World IP Day. In 2000, the World Intellectual Property Organization’s member states designated April 26 as World IP Day, with the aim of increasing general awareness and understanding of IP. This year’s theme IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity. WIPO says “To build our common future and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we need to re-think how we live, work and play. World IP Day 2024 is an opportunity to explore how intellectual property (IP) encourages and can amplify the innovative and creative solutions that are so crucial to building our common future.” On May 1, 2024, IPO will cosponsor an event on Capitol Hill to celebrate World IP Day. Join IPO and partner organizations either virtually or in-person at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, DC, for a special three-hour program. IPO Deputy Executive Director and Chief Policy Counsel Samantha Aguayo will moderate a panel discussion on "IP as a Solution to Achieve SDGs – What does the data show? Green Tech, Trademarks, Business and Economic Development." IPO Education Foundation President Henry Hadad (Bristol-Myers Squibb) will speak on a panel titled "IP as a Solution to Achieve SDGs – Education, Diversity, Access." The event is free to attend. 🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 I'm thrilled to share that our latest paper on the Making Every Contact Count (MECC) programme has just been published! 📄 Our study provides a comprehensive analysis of MECC implementation in the North East and North Cumbria (NENC) region. Through a mixed-methods evaluation, we examined the stages, strategies, and enablers/barriers of MECC implementation across various settings, including local government, healthcare, and the voluntary community sector. 🔍 Key Findings MECC implementation is in its early stages, with training primarily conducted between organisations. Organisational goals and supported resources (like logic models) play a significant role in implementation. Leadership and management buy-in are crucial for MECC sustainability. 💡 Conclusions Our research highlights the importance of regional leadership and offers evidence-based recommendations for policy and practice. A coordinated infrastructure and strategy are essential to address implementation challenges and support future MECC initiatives. ✨ Strengths and Limitations The MECC regional strategy group provided crucial advisory support. Our findings informed strategic recommendations to optimise MECC implementation. A systematic approach facilitates efficient translation to policy and practice. Recruitment challenges limited our dataset, possibly not fully capturing regional MECC diversity. Thanks to everyone involved in this project! Be great where your competition aren't. That was the advice I got from Steen Iver Andersen and Thomas Bjorn, veteran pioneers in the legal/IPR industry, when disclosing that I was starting an IP renewal provider back in 2017-2018. The advice led us to become strong online and not attend trade fairs, conferences and events that exist in the IP industry - No IP STARS (Managing IP), International Trademark Association (INTA) or IP Service World. It was the right call and we advanced because of it. Fast forward to 2024 and we are now able to competing where our competition are safe and the best - at events and IP fairs 🎉 🎉🎉. A heartfelt thank you to the speakers and other participants at our Geneva event last night. The audience clearly appreciated the insights of senior IP leaders - including Konstantinos Georgaras, Ben Llewellyn-Jones OBE, Catherine Chammartin, and others - about IP diversity and effective stakeholder engagement. Takeaways included the following: 1.        IP awareness and training programs must be adapted to target specific audiences. 2.        IP "awareness" is not enough. Entrepreneurs also need IP management skills and support.  3.        Centralizing different types of government services and support for entrepreneurs can make it easier for them to access what they need.  4.        Share IP management failures as well as IP success stories. 5.        Evaluate your programs; for one IP office, libraries turned out to be an unexpected but effective venue for reaching potential IP owners. 6.        Consider creating an app to provide entrepreneurs with a convenient one-stop-shop for IP management advice and services.
