What local issues do the nonprofit partners in Spur Local's 2024 Class work to address? Short answer: Everything! Many of these issues are inter-connected. This year's community-based organizations preserve and elevate stories of local history, equip the next generation to be engaged civic leaders, cultivate vibrant regional food systems, and directly provide services and support across our region. Together, they work holistically to make Greater Washington more equitable, reminding us that collaboration strengthens our collective impact. Happy Juneteenth! Today marks the 3rd annual federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in 1865, and honoring their legacy of power and resilience. Millions of grassroots activists, artists, and scholars fought for Juneteenth's official recognition as a momentous day in American history. Just as grassroots activism played a crucial role in nationally honoring Juneteenth, it is also an immense driving force in our current clean energy revolution. While many BIPOC-led nonprofits serve areas overburdened by climate change, transitioning to solar is one way these organizations build a green world for future generations. From providing after school youth groups in Oakland, California, to building community-run food systems in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Black-led nonprofits are providing on-the-ground resources and services to their communities. RE-volv proudly stands with our nonprofit partners who advance clean energy equity through solar. OUT NOW: On our latest episode (the last before we take a break over the summer) we have a fascinating conversation about how to understand and measure generosity around the world, with Pamala Wiepking, Stead Family Chair in International Philanthropy at Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. https://lnkd.in/eGRHGzat Including: -Is “philanthropy” a helpful word in a global context? -Is there any danger that if we broaden our definitions of generosity too far in our efforts to make them more universal, they lose meaning? -Is the role of philanthropy academics simply to observe and analyse giving and generosity, or to encourage it? -Are we in the midst of a "generosity crisis", or is the apparent decline in giving in places like the US, the UK and the Netherlands merely a reflection of the fact that the way we measure generosity has failed to evolve in step with how people actually choose to give?

To transform how your community engages with you and your work, consider listening before you act. In 2019 and 2020, Mission Partners served as the messaging and communications partner for NewsMatch—the largest grassroots fundraising campaign designed to support nonprofit news in the U.S. Through research, collaborative strategizing, and community listening, their fundraising goals exceeded the years prior despite the pandemic and politically charged attacks on the free press. What might your community be trying to tell you that could drive your mission to new heights? 🔹Read more about our work with NewsMatch: https://lnkd.in/eXWx4tAX 🔹Learn more about how Mission Partners can help you build community engagement: https://lnkd.in/e-p458pc

Data is key. Thank you to the Giving Gap for sharing this report today. I am sharing because it is that important to communicate and comprehend! See key finding below but please download the report also because there is so much you need to know! -Despite their unwavering commitment to addressing our country's greatest social challenges, Black leaders and their organizations are forced to navigate a funding ecosystem that unfairly advantages their white counterparts and restricts their own capacity for growth. -Passion and commitment don't pay the bills Despite their dedication, many leaders need to supplement their nonprofit income with additional jobs due to financial constraints (62%). -Black nonprofits need to keep the lights on The top need identified by these organizations is financial support for general operations (97%), highlighting the importance of grants and contributions. -Money is key, but it isn't everything Success is not solely attributed to financial support. Leaders highlighted their strong skill sets, spiritual practices, and support networks as crucial factors. #BackBlack #Blacknonprofits #collectivegiving #collectivepower

Acknowledging that philanthropy and its grantees can unintentionally perpetuate systemic racism and implicit bias, AFN supports our members and partners in actively addressing racial bias in the philanthropic sector through several initiatives. One initiative is a "Shared Language Glossary". This is a glossary of terms to promote shared language within our network. Too often, work around racial equity is confusing and misunderstood because the terms we use mean different things to different audiences. Explore the Glossary today: https://loom.ly/E-ZiPXY

The Solidarity Collaborative’s work will draw from and build upon existing efforts of leaders and organizations at the forefront of solidarity work, offering inspiring examples of what is possible with greater intentionality around and investment in robust solidarity efforts. These examples include a series of cross-community Solidarity Summits, dedicated to fostering and supporting solidarity among social justice communities, where leaders such as Judith Browne Dianis were able to come together and share in their experiences. In our recent case study, Dianis, Executive Director of the Advancement Project, shares about how Solidarity Summits offered the unique opportunity to learn about movement building and resource sharing alongside fellow social justice philanthropic leaders.
