Being a start-up comes with many challenges. Director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, Mike Casey, highlights the growing challenge startups face from foreign government's stealing IP and recruiting insiders. Casey notes the complexities facing startups, the need to protect IP, and the importance of establishing a security office. However, Casey misses the opportunity to recognize the cost and burden of developing a professional research security program in the startup environment. A new report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) emphasizes that essential government programs that millions of Americans rely on for basic needs like food and healthcare could become prime targets in future #cyberattacks aimed at sowing chaos and undermining faith in U.S. institutions. According to the report's authors, Yasir Atalan, Benjamin Jensen and Jose Macias, distrust in government will further compound as citizens struggle to understand cybersecurity strategy and the funding levels required to protect #criticalinfrastructure. This report was made possible by support provided by Gray Space Strategies—as part of a larger research project being conducting with Booz Allen Hamilton—and the Carnegie Corporation of New York. #nationalsecurity #publictrust #politicalwarfare #electionsecurity #cyberconflict #cyberwarfare #agtech #healthtech

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence's (ODNI) National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) issued a joint bulletin titled, "Safeguarding Our Innovation" to help protect U.S. emerging technology #startups from investment by foreign threat actors. "U.S. emerging tech startups are at the forefront of American innovation, but they face risks when seeking potential foreign investment to expand their firms. Unfortunately, our adversaries continue to exploit early-stage investments in U.S. startups to take their sensitive data. These actions threaten U.S. economic and national security and can directly lead to the failure of these companies. Today’s bulletin highlights this evolving threat and provides guidance for startups to secure their innovation as they grow," said NCSC Director Michael Casey. https://lnkd.in/gK6ushpT #GlobalBusiness

It happens often. Do we prepare for the aftermath of the hack or simply accept that it will happen? With technology at the forefront of creating a barrier to entry. It is also the pre and post human factors that will need to be understood as we see this activity more and more. Protect and enable the people.

I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts regarding our recent annual MDDR. While we are all familiar with the "regular" topics discussed, I found myself particularly focusing on the rise of foreign influence operations and AI security. It's alarming to see how many state actors are leveraging these tactics to manipulate people worldwide, spread disinformation, and promote negative agendas. This is a real tragedy and could potentially lead to significant disasters. Specifically, we have observed a surge in Iranian actors within the Israeli cyberspace, attempting to recruit individuals to carry out malicious activities and increase chaos using highly sophisticated methods. It makes me wonder if we, as an industry, can do better or if we are all destined to suffer in the name of freedom of speech. Democracies should have the ability to defend themselves. With the rise of these influence operations, we should all be concerned about the integrity of our local and national elections. Are they as clean as we perceive them to be? And why have radicals gained so much success in the past 10-15 years? https://lnkd.in/diwQ_vBN

The Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology (ICIT)’s Cory Simpson joined Dan Streetman on stage for today’s Tanium FedCyber Exchange to discuss the importance of speed and scale in #nationalsecurity. Here’s a recap of their fireside chat: “We’re inheriting legacy risk. The secure-by-design approach by so many organizations is so many years off. The speed and scale of threats are imminent. Adversaries can attack at scale, whether it’s human or digital infrastructure.” “We have to leverage imagination. It’s the key driver in strategic partnerships. The orgs that are pairing humans with technologies are creating better sysytmes and societies and that’s what America does best.” (On artificial intelligence adoption) “One of the most difficult things we face in government are siloes. We need to enable and connect more with people. The more we do that, the better we can operate at the speed and scale we need to.” - #ICIT’s Cory Simpson #FedCyberX #criticalinfrastructure #cyberdefense #cybersec #NatSec #nationaldefense

Underreported: During a Speech at Vanderbilt University today, FBI Director Christopher Wray warned that Chinese hackers have made their way into critical US infrastructure and were waiting for "the right moment to deal a devastating blow" to the US. Director Wray said, "China is positioning its enormous hacking enterprise, remember 50-1, for more than just the outrageous theft campaign just described a few minutes ago. It's using that mass, those numbers, to give itself the ability to physically wreak havoc on our critical infrastructure at a time of its choosing. The PRC has made it clear that it considers every sector that makes our society run, fair game. He added that China's "plan is to land low blows against civilian infrastructure to try and induce panic and break America's will to resist." Earlier this year, the FBI director speculated that a cyberattack against the US could come right before a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan, which he believes could impact a US response. Director Wray said the FBl and other government agencies continue to remove access to Chinese hackers, noting it's one of the FBľ's top priorities. He also called for more collaboration between the private sector and the FBl to mitigate these threats. #news #microsoft #bignews #breakingnews #bigtech #underreported #business #technology
