Happy #TechTuesday! In the United States, musculoskeletal injuries affect over 28 million patients annually – at least two million of which require fracture fixation surgery. These surgeries typically involve bone implants that are held in place by orthopedic screws, ensuring their functional position is held in place over time. Researchers at Clemson University have #patented "smart" orthopedic screws that could transform how we monitor bone implants. The advantages of this #groundbreaking technology are numerous: ✅ Allows physicians to non-invasively locate potential implant loosening and determine the callus is stiff enough to allow weight-bearing with low risk of refracture. ✅ Senses implant strain earlier, significantly improving diagnostics and reducing patient stress. ✅ Utilizes high resolution x-ray excited optical luminescence, providing a more accurate and quantitative measurement of implant strain. This new technology is a significant step forward in addressing the challenges faced by millions of patients undergoing orthopedic procedures each year. 3 common misconceptions about knee replacement surgery: Myth #1: Knee replacement surgery is a last resort. Fact: Knee replacement is often an effective solution for extensive arthritis or severe joint damage that significantly impacts quality of life. It shouldn't be delayed unnecessarily when conservative treatments like physical therapy, strength training, cortisone injections and pain medications have been exhausted. Myth #2: Recovery is long and arduous. Fact: While recovery requires effort and time, modern techniques and rehabilitation protocols have significantly improved outcomes. Most patients can walk with assistance within hours of surgery and begin physical therapy immediately. Your baseline health and fitness level play a huge role in the speed of your recovery. Myth #3: Knee replacements only last 10-15 years. Fact: Modern knee implants are highly durable and can last 20 years or even longer with proper care and maintenance. #kneereplacementsurgery #kneereplacementmyths

This patient had unfortunately had previous bunion surgery elsewhere that failed to truly realign the bones and also created excessive trauma to the big toe joint, resulting in big toe joint arthritis. We were able to straighten the toes and resolve the arthritis pain with Big Toe Joint Fusions. MTP fusions for the WIN!! This patient is now over one year post op on both feet, fully active, and thrilled with the outcome. You can read more about the Foot and Ankle Center of Iowa results with MTP fusion and Double (1st TMT and MTP fusion) for bunion deformities here: https://lnkd.in/egXpGRew #bunionsurgery #bunions #bunionsurgeryexperts #patientoutcomesmatter #patientexperience #lapiplastybigtoefusion #MTPfusion #halluxrigidus

Shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure in which all or part of the glenohumeral joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Such joint replacement surgery generally is conducted to relieve arthritis pain or fix severe physical joint damage. Shoulder replacement surgery is an option for treatment of severe arthritis of the shoulder joint. Arthritis is a condition that affects the cartilage of the joints. As the cartilage lining wears away, the protective lining between the bones is lost. When this happens, painful bone-on-bone arthritis develops. Severe shoulder arthritis is quite painful, and can cause restriction of motion. This is Daisy, a two-year-old Poodle, who presented to our hospital with a long standing gait abnormality. In the video, you can see how Daisy is mainly walking on her forelimbs with minimal weight on her hind limbs. Following a detailed orthopaedic examination, Daisy was diagnosed with bilateral superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) lateral luxation. This is an uncommon condition that requires surgical management. In the first picture, you can see the SDFT in a luxated position (scissors pointing at it). Surgery involves imbrication of the medial retinaculum with non-absorbable sutures. The second video shows Daisy at the re-examination six weeks after the procedure doing well. Daisy's owners are very happy with the progress and I think she is doing amazing! If you want to know more about this condition, I will leave the link for a recent paper here, happy reading! https://lnkd.in/dtc-7zXi

📄 This week’s case study is from Matt Koepplinger, DO, Board Certified, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. 🗣 Dr. Matt Koepplinger offered this perspective on the use of DermaPure in this traumatic injury case: “Given the complexity of the open wound with the associated exposed extensor mechanism, local coverage options were limited. We desired coverage options that would provide limited scar tissue adhesion for the extensor hood and limited wound contracture. DermaPure® provided sufficient full thickness coverage without additional trauma of a donor site, as well as, reduced wound contracture risk to enable the patient improved potential for a more functional range of motion.” 🔗 If you would like to know more about DermaPure and other company products, please visit the website: https://lnkd.in/exgd3kc *The case study contains some graphic content* #regenerativemedicine #decellularisation #dCELL #TRX #Casestudy
