Last night we were joined by Minister for Sport Maree Todd MSP and Double Paralympic Champion Jenny Holl to launch our new Women and Girls Strategy at West Lothian Cycle Circuit. After trying her hand at the Tandem with Ms Todd, Jenny took part in a Q & A session with Women and Girls, answering so many questions from the next generation of riders. After extensive consultation with the cycling community and key stakeholders earlier this year, we refined our strategy to make its vision as clear as possible. The strategy is broken down into five focus areas, the five Rs: Ride, Race, Role Models, Recognise and Relationships, which are all as important as the next if our 2027 targets, outlined in the strategy, are to be achieved. These include a 30% increase in female members and event entries, a 10% increase in retention within the Performance Pathway, 20% more coaches, and a number of new partnerships with other organisations who can help support the fulfilment of these goals. The strategy clearly outlines the vision, and steps that will be taken to get there, but sitting below this is an Action Plan, which goes into the detailed interventions, and sets annuals targets to keep Scottish Cycling on track to reach our 2027 goals. Good "advices" from the Velo-city 2024: Making the benefits of cycling an election issue Coined as the biggest election year in history, prioritising cycling policies as a key election issue is a growing concern. On the 't Kuipke stage, a fireside chat brought together advocates from across Europe to discuss the strategic role of elections in advancing cycling policies and the importance of a cross-party approach. Moderated by Froso Christofides, Director of Members & Networks at the European Cyclists' Federation, the panelists were questioned about how to raise support for cycling. A common theme was the necessity of linking cycling to broader topics to secure funding and political support. A resonating answer? “Don’t talk about cycling.” When advocating for cycling at the national level, creating unexpected alliances is essential. This involves interlinking the multiple benefits of cycling such as reduced traffic congestion, air pollution, greater public health and more people-friendly streets and many others. Cycling UK's chief executive, Sarah Mitchell, featured in the Sunday Telegraph discussing the challenges women face when cycling in cities, following the findings of Swapfiets survey. The survey revealed yet again the reality that women face every day while cycling in cities. As the first female chief executive of Cycling UK, Sarah Mitchell takes the issue of women’s cycle safety very seriously. “To encourage more women to cycle, we need to continue to support work that creates a safer, more inclusive cycle culture in the UK. At Cycling UK, we’ve recognised and supported people that seek to build on this through our 100 Women in Cycling annual list, which highlights exceptional women and groups who encourage others to cycle. 2023 Community champions like Eilidh Murray have made incredible progress campaigning tirelessly for women’s cycle safety in their position as a trustee for the London Cycling Campaign and as the coordinator of its new Women’s Network.  “But more importantly, we must make sure that the responsibility does not lie solely with women. We need men to take proactive steps to ensure the safety of women cycling in cities. The fact that 62% of women fear cycling in urban areas because of road rage and harassment is a stark one. We need men to call out and report that behaviour when it happens and for those reports to be taken seriously. The UCI recently announced the introduction of Women's Pro Teams. This is a second division for women's cycling teams that will exist between the Women’s World Tour (WWT) and Continental (CT) level. Teams registering at this level commit to UCI rules with minimum standards that are very similar to those of the WWT. The Cyclists' Alliance (TCA) supports this step in the further professionalization of women’s cycling. At the same time, we want to emphasize that there is still work to be done at the Continental level. Over the years, we gained a lot of insight into the working conditions at the CT level. Based on this data, the TCA has several recommendations to improve the working environment within the CT teams. Whilst we understand financial resources are often limited, we believe that when riders are expected to reach a professional level, there should be the same obligation and expectations on the employer. This translates into four recommendations for the UCI: 1.  Increased monitoring and enforcement of compliance with existing UCI regulations by existing CTs; 2.  Create and impose minimum financial standards for any prospective or current CT’s; 3.  Create and impose minimum standards regarding the professionalism of a CT’s organization; 4.  Standardization of rider employment classification TCA recently raised concerns about the conditions within Continental teams and provided recommendations for change by sending a letter to the UCI on October 23rd, 2023. Unfortunately, TCA never received a response. The issues persist at this level of cycling, so TCA wishes to bring this to the UCI's attention once again.  The introduction of Women’s Pro Teams marks a positive step forward for women’s cycling. At the same time, the problems at the CT level remain, and the gap between all levels is growing. TCA encourages the UCI to deepen their commitment to professionalizing women’s cycling at all UCI governed levels as soon as possible.
