Living and training with Filipino maritime cadets in the Philippines opened my eyes to the significant hurdles these young, aspiring seafarers face. 🇵🇭 From rigorous educational demands to the critical yet challenging onboard training phase, the journey from a cadet to a certified seafarer is full of obstacles. 📊 1. Educational Demands and Financial Burden: Maritime education in the Philippines is both strict and costly, demanding a four-year commitment from cadets in disciplines like marine transportation or engineering. This intense regimen, similar to military training, prepares cadets for the harsh realities of seafaring life but often at a significant financial strain on their families. 💸 2. Onboard Training Bottlenecks: Post-graduation, cadets are required to complete a year of onboard training, crucial for practical experience and certification. However, securing these spots is competitive, with not enough positions to match the cadet output, leading to underemployment or career shifts for many. 🤔 3. The 'Who You Know' Syndrome: Despite their qualifications, many cadets find that employment opportunities often favour those with insider connections, sidelining merit and potential. 💬 How can this be resolved ? 1. Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): Encourage collaborations between the government, maritime schools, and shipping companies to increase onboard training opportunities. This could involve sponsored programs or incentives for companies providing practical training slots. 🎯 2. Scholarship and Sponsorship Programs: Increase financial aid and scholarship programs targeting maritime cadets, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds. Private sector involvement can be pivotal here. 🌐 3. Merit-Based Recruitment Platforms: Develop transparent, digital platforms that prioritise skills and qualifications over connections for job placements. Such platforms can democratise access to employment opportunities. 🔍 4. Global Internship Programs: Foster partnerships with international maritime organisations to offer Filipino cadets global onboard training opportunities, broadening their exposure and experience. 🌍 During my time in the Philippines, speaking daily with cadets revealed not just the hardships but the resilience and passion these young individuals have for the maritime industry. They are not just seeking jobs but aiming to uphold the Philippines' proud seafaring heritage. 🇵🇭 Let's champion a future where every cadet's dedication and hard work are met with genuine opportunity and recognition. 🌊 #maritime #ship #shipping #lifeatsea #sea #seafarer #merchantnavy #seaman #vessel #sealife #shiplife #nautical #ocean #merchantmarine #ships #seafarers #marineengineer #cadets #philippines

Check out this great feature on one of our current Marine Navigation Technology students, Julianna Lucic!
“My grandfather worked for Marine Atlantic his entire life and sent my mom a link to the Marine Navigation Technology program at NSCC suggesting that I check it out. I read about the program and applied that very same night. The main deciding factor for me is the work-life balance that this career will provide. When I looked into working on ships, usually the time you get off is equal to the time you work. If I go away for a month, I get a month off. If I go away for 3 months, I get 3 months off. To me, that sounds very, very nice. I love that when I’m at work, I'll also be travelling. Even if I don't get to get off the ship and explore all the places I go, the idea of travelling the ocean is beyond exciting. Just thinking about the things I’ll get to see and the people I’ll meet makes me thrilled. Because that’s what life is supposed to be about, new opportunities for new adventures! This kind of job offers great pay and a work-life balance. A career in the marine industry coincides with the kind of life that I want to build for myself.” - Julianna Lucic, Marine Navigation Technology student, Strait Area Campus, NSCC Nautical Institute #PeopleOfNSCC Learn more about Julianna’s NSCC experience: https://lnkd.in/eaQAVJhF

As an aviation student, I have been highlighting a significant issue that has persisted for some time. It is crucial that stricter regulations be implemented to address and mitigate these challenges. There needs to be a framework to ensure that educational institutions maintain transparency in their financial dealings, offer fair pricing, and provide sufficient support to students. Additionally, oversight mechanisms should be put in place to protect students from unfair practices and ensure they receive the quality education they are promised. #indianaviation #Humansinaviation
