The buildings and construction sector is by far the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for a staggering 40% of global emissions. The production and use of materials such as cement, steel, and aluminum have a significant carbon footprint. Historically, much of the sector's progress has centered around reducing the "operational” carbon emissions of buildings – those emissions stemming from heating, cooling, and lighting. Projections suggest that these operational emissions will decrease from 75% to 50% of the sector's total emissions in the coming decades. However, solutions to mitigate the buildings "embodied" carbon emissions – originating from the design, production, and deployment of materials such as cement, steel, and aluminum – have lagged. To effectively address this challenge, international action and collaboration must bring together all stakeholders from across the entire lifecycle of the buildings sector, both within informal and formal settings. #GreenBuildingMaterials #Edge #leedcertification #GHG #construction

2024 roundup - January 📅🌱 We started the year off strong with the achievement of our new step in lowering the CO2e emissions of our aluminium profiles. We're able to confirm with an independently verified EPD that the Hydro CIRCAL 75R aluminium we use for all of our products as standard in the UK contains just 1.9 CO2e emissions per kg of aluminium (compared to 2.3kg CO2e/kg of Al). With every step towards decarbonisation we take, we are lowering the environmental impact the building and construction market has on the planet.

Heat pumps are the Government's preferred low-carbon heating solution - but few companies are truly qualified to install and commission them so they operate optimally. This is one area where, we believe, regulatory change in the construction industry is lagging behind. But perhaps surprisingly, we believe that many other regulatory changes will ultimately favour sustainable construction practices, and help to strengthen businesses like ours. Starting next year, the CO2 performance ladder will be used as an award criterion for certain public contracts, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions from public construction sites. 💶 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞: The higher your CO2 ambition level on the ladder, the higher your "fictitious discount", and therefore, the greater your competitive advantage. The highest ambition level can result in a 10% fictitious discount. 📅 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞: The award criterion will be implemented by all entities within the Department of Mobility and Public Works and will be expanded year by year: ▸ From January 1, 2025, the award criterion will apply to all investment contracts for works with a value of 5 million euros or more (excl. VAT). ▸ From January 1, 2026, for all investment contracts for works of 3 million euros or more (excl. VAT). ▸ From January 1, 2027, for all investment and maintenance contracts for works of 1 million euros or more (excl. This report is an update to Turner’s first ever #EmbodiedCarbon Baseline published at the end of 2022.
