In a few weeks, I'll be speaking with a faculty learning community at Lone Star College-Kingwood about annotation and learning. I'm really excited. Why? First, this group of faculty is committed to developing inclusive learning environments that promote student belonging and growth. I've long advocated that the literacy practice of annotation is an effective way for learners to establish community, share their ideas, and build knowledge together--all of which contributes to more inclusive and engaging education. Second, I'm eager to connect with faculty from multiple disciplines who are keen to incorporate annotation across the curriculum. Whether faculty teach courses in the natural sciences, or the social sciences, or the humanities, instructors value thoughtful engagement with course content and opportunities for students to authentically interact with discipline-specific readings. Annotation is a social and collaborative practice relevant across disciplines, for it encourages learners to deeply analyze texts and make their thinking visible. And third, despite all the chatter about AI and learning, it'll be really nice to collaborate with faculty about a learning practice that's persisted for centuries. Annotation has long helped people read, comprehend, and learn together. As a social practice, annotation predates social media (and computers!); as a generative act of intellectual meaning-making, annotation will persist regardless of however AI advances.
