On this sunny morning from my beautiful Montreal, I'd like to throw a challenge. In 3 words or less, what's getting in the way of fixing our healthcare system - in Canada, the US, or anywhere else? Should be an easy exercise. 😉 #healthcareprofessionals #doctors #nurses #nursesonlinkedin #healthcareleaders #healthcarereform #medicaleducation #nursingeducation #patientexperience #patientengagement
SICKcare versus HEALTHcare
Layers of bureaucracy
Underfunding. Privatization. Dehumanization. (I recommend the BBC miniseries This Is Going to Hurt if you'd like to understand what this means. Doctors and nurses in the public system are overtaxed to the point of unbearable, life-threatening exhaustion. Patients dependent on universal healthcare can't access the resources they need. The wealthy aren't necessarily receiving better care either when they choose to go private. The main character is an obstetrician based on the show's creator Adam Kay, a real life medically-trained doctor, who left the system. In one episode, he takes up a lucrative opportunity in an upscale clinic with all the luxury one can imagine. Spoiler alert: It doesn't go well. Since the private clinic is not in a hospital, mother, baby, and doctor do not have immediate access to emergency resources when something goes wrong. Excellent soundtrack too!)
Profits over people
Irith, lack of resources. We are always in a short supply of doctors and nurses. We need to make it cheaper to become nurses and doctors and encourage more people to go into the profession while not lowering standards. 🤔
Broken systems. (Did it in 2.)
Reactive not proactive
