We are officially an EPFL Startup! We were accepted into Blaze, which is basically the startup accelerator for young founders and EPFL graduates. Of course, I'm not an EPFL graduate, but what matters is that at least one person on the co-founding team is, in this case Simone Roznowicz. ➡ It's an equity-free accelerator, meaning they take no equity from you if you join the program. ➡ We went to the program's first session a few days ago and there were around 7-8 startups in total, each with 2-3 people on average (one had one 1 founder and another startup had even 4). So it's pretty good that the batch is small and more focused with fewer distractions. ➡ Almost 50% of startups were composed of students, doing this part-time. I wish them the best, but I think it's pretty hard to build something meaningful while doing it in their free time while prioritizing studies. There were only 2 women, so there may be ways to encourage more participation from them in the future. ➡ The first session was devoted to introductions, and an explanation of the program objectives while also mentioning the possibility of getting up to 10k in grants per startup for the costs of launch and deployment of the product. Unfortunately, I still haven't had the chance to talk to understand better what other startups are specifically doing as the intros were very quick, and couldn't grasp many details. ✅ At a glance, two seemed to be most promising to me: one is AI-focused and the other is biotech/pharma-related. Both are led by people with expertise in their fields after working a couple of years in tech and pharma companies respectively. There was much more time to discuss with other startups at the end of the session, but we dedicated the time to talking to the founder and other members of a YCombinator company that came to present their crazy story of ups and downs after joining Blaze. ➡ A few days later someone asked us: "I thought you were 'independent' and wouldn't take part in local accelerators?!" ✅ Yes, it's ultimately still totally up to you to find your startup direction, but even if it helps just a tiny bit, why not join it? ✅ Then, joining the program allows us to call ourselves "EPFL startup" which can convey more trust in some conversations. ✅ Plus, you may meet some interesting people along the way and doesn't require much time either. Whatever can help your startup grow should be experimented as long as it is a good tradeoff of your time. ⬇ It should have been a random snapshot, but then Lorenzo Arbolino helped us create the perfect scenario for a legendary photo 🤣 moving the table, plant, and branded water bottle in front of us to give a nicer view! Then Simone was even handed a book and what better than the "Lean Startup"? But he is not paid to advertise the book 😅 ⬇

Birchal, Australia’s largest crowdsourced funding platform, is set to launch its first angel syndicate with a $300,000 grant from LaunchVic. “Birchal First” will activate more than $6 million for early-stage startups by combining lead investment from angels and crowdsourced funding from retail investors via the Birchal platform. The syndicate will focus on hardware technology startups due to the high manufacturing and development costs for pre-seed and seed founders. It's the 10th angel network LaunchVic has funded to date to unlock more capital for early-stage founders. LaunchVic-funded angel networks have supported 618 new investors and seen $33.9 million pumped into startups. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/g7jzfyqs
