Earlier today, I had a great meeting with Mark Sherfy, MBV and a crop advisor from a large agricultural company. As we introduced Phytech’s technology, the conversation naturally shifted toward irrigation recommendations. It made me reflect on how much growers still depend on old metrics, and whether they truly capture the complexity of agricultural systems. So, here’s my take on irrigation management, and why plant-based monitoring is the future. The Irrigation Challenge: ETc and Crop Coefficients Irrigation management in agriculture is complex. Growers are armed with scientific tools designed to optimize water use, but the plot variability often diminishes their effectiveness. A prime example is the reliance on historical evapotranspiration data (ETo) and crop coefficients (Kc). While Kc is backed by decades of research, it doesn’t always capture the nuanced needs of individual orchards. Kc have been studied across a wide range of crops, from almonds to corn. These coefficients provide a ratio of the water evaporated from a reference crop (usually grass) to the specific crop. When multiplied by daily ETo, this ratio estimates the crop water needs. In theory, this method ensures optimal water use under standard conditions or a "typical year." But what exactly constitutes a “typical” year in agriculture? Conditions vary widely—factors like weather, soil types & infiltration rates, tree health, rootstock, variety, and yield load introduce tremendous variability in water needs. In many cases, this overwhelms decision-making, leading growers to stick with the familiar approach of irrigating based on ETc, which may impact plant health and yield. Moving Beyond ETc: Real-Time Plant Monitoring Given the variability in orchard conditions, an alternative approach is essential—one that goes beyond Kc and focuses directly on the plants themselves. This is where Phytech comes into play. By offering real-time plant monitoring, we provide an innovative solution to assess the actual water status of trees and crops. Using dendrometers, Phytech measures tree growth and stress levels, enabling growers to make informed, data-driven decisions tailored to their orchard's daily needs. Combined with soil moisture and water application measurements, this continuous feedback loop offers precision and responsiveness, minimizing the risks of over- or under-irrigation. Focusing on real-time crop needs—rather than relying on generalized historical data—is how we at Phytech address agriculture’s inherent variability, offering a more accurate guide for irrigation decisions. The Future: Balancing Sustainability and Productivity As water scarcity and sustainability become pressing global concerns, growers must shift away from generalized ETc values and adopt technology that determines the specific needs of each orchard or field. By doing so, they can strike a balance between water conservation and maximizing crop productivity—ensuring a sustainable future for agriculture.
