Today is International Day of the Girl—a day to reflect on the dreams and challenges faced by girls around the world. The truth is, being born a girl still comes with barriers. Plan International’s latest State of the World’s Girls 2024 - Still We Dream report highlights just how stark these challenges can be. For example, 76% of girls report feeling unsafe walking in their own neighborhoods after dark, and over 70% have experienced harassment online. Despite these realities, girls continue to dream, resist, and push for a better future. At Plan International, we are standing alongside them. This year, through our #UniteForPeace movement, we are focusing on girls affected by conflict—girls who face unimaginable obstacles, yet still hold onto hope. I encourage you to stand with us and show your support. On a personal note and as a mother of a teenage daughter, I often reflect on how much of a difference it makes where you are born. Growing up in a place where a girl can pursue her dreams without the same fears many girls around the world face daily is a sobering reminder that, while we celebrate progress, there is still so much more to be done. Meet Dayanna Palmar Uriana, one of the 2024 VIP Lab Fellows researching how power inequalities impact violence. Dayanna's project explores the discrimination faced by Wayuu indigenous women living in Colombia and Venezuela. Discrimination related to issues of identity, education, participation in public and political life, and access to human rights creates a landscape of violence, manifesting as gender-based violence, territorial violence, spiritual violence, and poverty. This research examines the situation of indigenous women within the framework of human rights, women's rights, and the rights of indigenous peoples, centering the collective voice of the Wayuu people in the investigation to transform inequitable power dynamics and generate solutions aligned with the Wayuu women's own vision. #Peacebuilding #Changemakers #Colombia #Venezuela #HumanRights

This day brings to light the challenges that girls face, but more importantly, it raises their voices and rights to equal opportunities. Girls are powerful agents of change. When equipped with education, healthcare, and protection from discrimination, they can break the cycle of poverty and lead innovation to build more resilient communities. Still, too many girls suffer barriers to fundamental rights, including child marriage, other forms of gender-based violence, and a lack of opportunities in education. Our collective responsibility is to stand up for every girl so she can dream freely, grow with support, and thrive with resources. Let's champion policies and initiatives that provide girls with safe spaces, quality education, and leadership opportunities. We are investing not just in their future but in that of humanity. Today, on International Day of the Girl Child, we celebrate the dreams and aspirations of girls everywhere. This year’s theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” gives us a glimpse into what they see for themselves and the world around them. We spoke to our Girl Icon Alumni, and their responses were a mix of ambition and stark reality. Many girls shared dreams of becoming doctors, teachers, and nurses—eager to graduate and make a difference in their communities. But, in contrast, some dreams were rooted in the pursuit of the most basic rights—like going to school instead of being forced into child labour at a young age. These visions are a powerful reminder of the inequalities that still exist. More profoundly, some girls are not only thinking of themselves but of their entire communities. They envision a future where violence against women is eradicated, where female foeticide no longer exists, and where every girl grows up in a society that respects her rights and dignity. At Milaan, we stand with these girls and their dreams, working tirelessly to create a world where every girl’s vision can be realized—a world where education, equality, and empowerment are within reach for all.
