Thanks SCCA - Singapore Corporate Counsel Association and Stanley Park for the opportunity to participate on the panel to discuss Managing the Legal Team: What should be the most Influential Factors in Hiring, Terminating & Promoting? at the APAC Legal Congress 2024. What a great turnout of more than 1,400 participants! My key takeaways from our panel : - Strategic alignment to the business is critical for the team's success; - We need to engage in person to build meaningful connections; - It's all about the people! The right person for the job is the one who has the right skill set and embraces team values; - We need to have open and transparent communications all the time. Great frank and open sharing from my co-panelists Hwee Ping Teo, Pujarini S. and Glenn Seah and our excellent moderator, Tze Phern Ang.

I find myself thinking how I can pivot or impact my environment and how I can leave value trails as I continue to grow. As an informal advocate, I feel my advocacy soul coming alive, the growing desire to focuses on promoting and protecting the interests, values, and needs of the organization or its stakeholders. This role can be internal, aimed at advocating for colleagues and aligning them with organizational goals, representing the organization’s interests in broader contexts. I envision the Key responsibilities of an advocacy role might include: 1. Building Awareness: Educating —about the organization’s mission, values, and goals to foster understanding and support. 2. Influencing Policy: Shaping internal policies or lobbying for changes that benefit the organization, its employees, or industry standards. 3. Representing Stakeholders: Serving as a voice to ensure needs and concerns are addressed by leadership. 4. Engaging with External Entities: Collaborating with government agencies, industry groups, and media to build strategic alliances, share perspectives, and advocate for favorable outcomes. 5. Driving Organizational Change: Using insights gathered through advocacy to help guide organizational changes that improve processes, culture, or alignment with the community or industry. 6. Crisis Management and Communication: Representing the organization’s stance and managing communication in times of crisis to maintain trust and protect the organization’s reputation. 7. Promoting Equity and Inclusion: Ensuring all voices within the organization are heard, especially those of underrepresented groups, to create a more inclusive and fair workplace.

Are you hiring just for skills? 🤔 That’s a short-term fix. 🚧 🌟 Culture is the backbone of your organization. 🌱 You can train skills, but you can’t teach values. When you bring in people who align with your values, you’re not just adding talent—you’re building trust, boosting collaboration, and fostering a shared vision that pushes everyone forward. 🔑 Without cultural alignment, even the most skilled hire can lead to tension, disengagement, and disruption. 😬 ✅ Prioritize culture in your hiring process, and watch your team evolve into a cohesive force of productivity, passion, and purpose. #CulturalFit #LegalHiring #TeamSynergy #PatrickLencioni #CoreValuesFirst #LawFirmLeadership #LegalRecruiting
