Asian American and Pacific Islander residents constitute 15.5% of California's population. However, they face persistent hate-based violence and institutional racism, particularly after the surge of anti-AAPI sentiment during COVID-19. Acts of hate frequently occur in public spaces where civil rights protections are limited, and many of these acts go unclassified as crimes, rendering traditional policing ineffective. 2024 #IrvineAwards recipient Manjusha Kulkarni leads AAPI Equity Alliance, a coalition of over 40 organizations fighting for AAPI communities, advocating for legal and policy changes that promote mental health access and confront discrimination. Yesterday I was attend a session about "Unite Against Violence" (would likely focus on raising awareness about the various forms of violence, their impact on individuals and communities, and strategies to address and prevent them. It may include discussions on conflict resolution, fostering empathy, promoting equality, and building support systems for victims. Attendees could gain insights into practical actions they can take to contribute to a safer, more inclusive society) at Artistic Milliners. It was a great session because it increased my knowledge about law and practices in our country. #violence #domestic_violence #harassment #public_harassment #workplace_harassment

"Yesterday, I had an enlightening conversation with a Senior Advocate who shed light on a disturbing yet crucial aspect of our society: awareness surrounding cases of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) and Section 376. The Senior Advocate rightly pointed out that the increasing awareness about these issues is bringing more cases to light. While this may seem like progress, it also unveils the grim reality of the prevalence of such offenses in our society. What's even more alarming is the role of awareness regarding compensation. It's disheartening to learn that cases are emerging predominantly from marginalized communities such as JJ colonies and slums. In these areas, NGOs and law enforcement agencies sometimes manipulate compensation amounts, further complicating the pursuit of justice for victims. Moreover, the Senior Advocate mentioned another concerning trend – the invocation of Section 376 due to sour relationships or live-in situations. This highlights how the law can sometimes be exploited or misinterpreted to settle personal disputes, adding another layer of complexity to the issue. Indeed, awareness can be a double-edged sword. While it's essential for bringing justice to victims and holding perpetrators accountable, it also unveils systemic flaws and exploitation. As a society, it's imperative that we address these issues comprehensively, ensuring that awareness leads to meaningful change and not further exploitation. #POCSO #Section376 #AwarenessAndJustice"

Yes, it is possible! On this final day, which coincides with International Human Rights Day, we amplify the impactful words of Erelu Bisi-Fayemi: “Victims become survivors only through the quality of support they receive—ranging from prompt medical attention, psycho-social support, access to justice, economic empowerment, and the care of compassionate champions. Breaking the cycle of violence requires everyone—politicians, religious leaders, traditional leaders, parents, families, and communities—to play their part. It is possible.” 💡 Centre LSD's Call to Action: As we close this year's #16DaysOfActivism, let us take these words as a charge to action: 1. Provide holistic support to survivors of gender-based violence. 2. Hold abusers accountable while creating systems that prioritize healing and justice. 3. Empower survivors with the tools they need to rebuild their lives. Encourage collective action from every sector of society to end the culture of violence. This is not just a campaign; it’s a movement for change that must continue every day of the year. Together, we can create a world where survivors thrive, and violence becomes a thing of the past. It is possible! #16DaysOfActivism #HumanRightsDay #EndGBV #SupportSurvivors #TogetherWeCan

Bernburg et al. (2006) bring to light the critical issue of juvenile justice interventions inadvertently reinforcing delinquent behaviors among youths. This revelation urges us to reassess how we engage with young offenders. By fostering programs that encourage positive social networks and provide constructive opportunities, we can prevent the cycle of recidivism. Let's discuss: what are some successful strategies you've seen or would like to see implemented to support our youth in a more meaningful way?

To end GBV in marginalized communities, tailored interventions are essential. These include accessible shelters, inclusive laws, and targeted awareness campaigns that challenge stigma and uphold the rights of all individuals, regardless of ability or identity. #16DaysOfActivism

This new (open access) article sheds light on the impact of violence exposure on young people and the perpetuation of the 'cycle of violence.' The authors argue that social and support interventions are necessary to reduce notions of toxic masculinity and promote non-violent environments. The article also raises important questions about sensitivity and context in relation to justice-involved youths' response to violence exposure. Check it out to learn more about this critical issue. https://lnkd.in/gc72FjYT #youthviolence #socialinterventions #nonviolence

Another article published today in 'The Daily Guardian" newspaper, on the occasion of International Men's Day, highlights the significance of acknowledging both the contributions and vulnerabilities of men in society. It underscores how societal expectations and stereotypes often disregard men's emotional and mental health challenges, including their experiences as victims of domestic violence and other forms of abuse. The article advocates for the implementation of gender-neutral laws, inclusive policies, and robust support systems to address these challenges. There is a need for a balanced approach that safeguards men's rights while promoting emotional well-being within families and communities. https://lnkd.in/dn-REuEe #mentalhealthofmen #genderneutrallaw #menright #domesticviolence #vulnerabilities
