Today is #Juneteenth and our #NEOPartner, The Leadership Conference Education Fund reminds us that, "Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom; it's a call to action. We must ensure that all voices are heard in our democracy. The fight for the freedom to vote is crucial for safeguarding our rights and building a more just society. For democracy to work, it must include us all." Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/gy-hMtJG

One way LGNZ can support local councils is by encouraging them to vote to require rental property investors to pay commercial rates. Rental property owners consider this to be a business since they deduct interest expenses and declare the income in their tax returns. Therefore they should pay commercial rates. This can be achieved through a simple council vote, similar to the 'AirBnb Tax'.
Who’s under 40 and shaping the future of our communities? Our Yemmies! Our Young Elected Member (YEM) Hui is underway in Christchurch, focusing on attracting and keeping talented young leaders in local government. With 80 members under 40 across New Zealand, YEM is growing fast, but younger voices are still underrepresented—just 14.6% of elected officials are under 40, while 34% of Kiwis fall into that age group. This hui is about changing that. "This year’s theme, ‘Driving change through community leadership’ is critically important, as it’s our generation and the generations that follow who will reap the benefits or pay the price of decisions we make today,” says YEM Co-Chair Rohan O’Neill-Stevens.

🏔 A king, a boulder and a Zen story: Our Chamber’s mission in 2025 🏔 I recently came across a Zen story that resonates with me... It's about a king who noticed his people growing complacent. To teach them a lesson, he placed a massive boulder on the main road, blocking the city’s entrance. As he watched, people approached the boulder, only to give up after little effort. Days passed until a lone peasant came along. Unlike the others, he didn’t walk away. He kept trying until an idea sparked. He found a sturdy branch in the woods and used it as a lever to move the rock. This story is a powerful reminder of how we can lead our communities. Challenges can often seem like obstacles too big to move. It’s easy to turn a blind eye or get stuck in endless debates. Yet, like the peasant, all it takes is a handful of inspired individuals ready to tackle problems with fresh perspectives and a willingness to collaborate…and maybe even compromise. As we gear up for our Annual Luncheon, I’m inspired by this story and its lessons. As a Chamber, we are uniquely positioned to advocate for and support our businesses, while seeking creative solutions for ongoing issues impeding growth in our community. I’m excited about the positive changes we’ll bring in 2025. Let's be the ones who find solutions, leverage our collective strengths and clear the path to progress. Together, we can achieve lasting growth and transformative community building. The question for you is, are you ALL IN like our Chamber is⁉ We hope you'll join us at our Annual Luncheon & Awards Ceremony on Thursday, November 14. Registration closes end of day Wednesday. https://lnkd.in/guW2aF7n #communityleadership #leadership #chamberstrong

Being your own boss To some folks the idea of being your own boss has an exciting appeal. Starting from scratch will bring on many challenges and quite frankly not everyone is “wired” to begin a new endeavor. And while in the business world an individual usually makes that kind of decision with only a handful of people even aware of what your plans are going to be. In the world of Church planting there can be many more people involved; prayer partners, financial supporters, core team members and people impacted in the community. This is one reason (and there are some others) that it is recommended that before taking a set into the journey of church planting. A good assessment will not only identify your strengths and weaknesses it will help your leadership team know what help will be most beneficial to you. You can check out the resource page at Church Extension ministries https://lnkd.in/eGVimbYW to find several levels of assessments. And as a note: when you are a church planter or pastor you are truly a servant of the Lord and not a boss.

When things go wrong we often want to blame people or bad luck. Often it is best to think about the system. Check out my blog post https://wix.to/aZFuyM5 #newblogpost #leadership, #leadershipteams, #independentschools
