Researchers from Northwest A&F University, Hainan University, and partners have successfully developed rust resistant wheat through a combination of genetic modification and gene editing. The results of the study also show significant insights into the development of wheat cultivars resistant to high temperatures from the pollination stage to maturity. 🔬 Human Germline Gene Editing (hGGE): Ethical Challenges and Future Potential 🔬 Human Germline Gene Editing (hGGE) offers groundbreaking possibilities, from preventing hereditary diseases to advancing our understanding of human biology. By editing DNA at the embryonic level, we could potentially eliminate genetic disorders like cystic fibrosis and Huntington's disease. However, hGGE brings significant ethical concerns. Issues like unintended genetic changes, the creation of "designer babies," and the potential exacerbation of social inequality require careful consideration. Public engagement and international regulation are critical to ensuring responsible use of this powerful technology. As we stand at the crossroads of scientific innovation and moral responsibility, the future of hGGE depends on overcoming technical challenges and creating robust ethical frameworks. Read more about the promise, perils, and societal impact of hGGE in my latest blog! How to use genetics to determine relationship? Genetic relationships are analysed based on the comparison of allelic identity or differences, regardless of the number of SNPs that differ between two alleles of a gene, which simplifies the analysis. How to calculate allele frequency? Allele frequency, or gene frequency, is the relative frequency of an allele (variant of a gene) at a particular locus in a population, expressed as a fraction or percentage. Specifically, it is the fraction of all chromosomes in the population that carry that allele. The allele frequency is distinct from the genotype frequency, although they are related, and allele frequencies can be calculated from genotype frequencies. In population genetics, allele frequencies are used to describe the amount of variation at a particular locus or across multiple loci. When considering the ensemble of allele frequencies for a large number of distinct loci, their distribution is called the allele frequency spectrum. Arctic birds face extreme weather! Our new study reveals how Lapland longspur, an Arctic living passerine, copes with harsh conditions using genomic approaches. Extreme spring & snowstorm conditions trigger stress responses, affecting reproduction & metabolism. Key gene FKBP5 is upregulated in response to acute stress. Learn more about how birds adapt!
