The Australian business landscape has experienced a significant shockwave, with a staggering 362,893 businesses closing their doors last month according to the latest ABS announcement. Representing a staggering 14% exit rate, this mass closure is having a profound impact on the economy and the small business sector. To gain insights into the broader implications of this economic downturn, we spoke with Ben Thompson, CEO and Chief Economist at Employment Hero. In the following article, Thompson offers his expert analysis and advice on navigating this challenging period. “The ABS’ announcement this morning on business count, entries and exits reveals a troubling surge of 362,893 closures; 14% exit rate. This is very concerning, particularly among SMEs. But these figures, unfortunately, were something we were expecting,” says Ben Thompson, CEO and Chief Economist, Employment Hero. “We have observed the consistent struggles of Australian SMEs for quite some time now, and this directly underscores the severe economic pressures facing the sector. However, these numbers should serve as the final wake-up call: Australia’s SMEs are not just struggling – they’re shutting down at an alarming rate. “The current economic climate, marked by soaring inflation, rising costs, and weakened consumer confidence, is pushing many SMEs to the brink. In fact, ACCI recently revealed half of Australian SMEs have considered closing their doors in the last 12 months. https://lnkd.in/gpWpv-xP

According to the Federation of Small Businesses 99.9 per cent of the UK’s companies are SMEs. That’s 5.6 million small to medium employers in the UK. These companies are the driving force of generating tax revenues… the beating heart of our economy. That’s why a new government in 2024 must put the entrepreneurs who launch and sustain successful businesses first. It’s easy to bash wealthy people, but wealth creates jobs, investment and progress. Wealth cascades out to support people at all levels within an organisation. But without entrepreneurial spirit, wisdom and the confidence to take a risk there are no successful businesses. Whatever their politics the new government in 2024 should prioritise and encourage enterprise… that’s good for everyone. #UKelection2024 #SME #entrepreneurs Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce British Chambers of Commerce Department for Business and Trade

Insolvencies among AU small and medium enterprises are at record high this year so here is a little reality check to bring some perspective. #buy #local for #thriving #communities “Some 43% of small businesses were #not #profitable in the last full tax year. Three-quarters of self-employed people, for whom their business is their full-time livelihood endeavour, take home less than average total weekly earnings. There's no rivers of gold for those people. They're working their tails off every day…. The narrative about how buoyant profitability is in the business economy is not the profit trajectory of the 70% of small businesses who are unincorporated. If there is profit, it is 3% a year, whereas for the larger corporates annual profit growth is at 13 per cent.” The Hon Bruce Billson GAICD

The UK saw a surge in small businesses in 2020, reaching a peak of 5.98 million. However, the trend has since slowed down, with the number of new businesses starting up decreasing. As a result the total number of small businesses in the UK now stands at around 5.5 million. This decline can be attributed to various factors, including the ongoing economic uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the challenges faced by small businesses in accessing finance and navigating complex regulatory requirements. Despite these challenges, small businesses remain a vital part of the UK economy, contributing significantly to job creation and economic growth. It is crucial that policymakers continue to support small businesses and create a supportive environment for entrepreneurship to thrive in the UK. At FORCE, we value the importance of small businesses and strive to provide accessible services for businesses of all sizes. Whether it's mentoring or hands-on growth services, we're here to help. #SuffolkBusiness #SmallBusinessUK

Let’s hope that this council means business and can get things done. A good starting point would be #GCloud14, which opened for tenders last week. #GCloud has historically been a successful route to the public sector market for SMEs providing or supporting cloud services. With insurance thresholds raised x 10 and a new financial viability test that will knock out many, it will be interesting to see how many SMEs even bother to apply. #SMEs #procurement #competition #cloud

👏 👏 A New Small Business Council has been launched by the Department for Business and Trade 👏 👏 This fabulous news reaffirms the UK's commitment to its 5.6 million SMEs. Chaired by Small Business Minister, Kevin Hollinrake, the Council will work alongside the PM’s Business Council to tackle the key issues facing small firms who will be given new levels of access direct to government. At last! 99.9% of all businesses in this country are small businesses. Yes 99.9%. They support 27 million jobs across the UK, accounting for £4.5 trillion (yes trillion) of annual turnover. ➡ Over half the UK GDP comes from SMEs ➡ Over 60% of the UK workforce is employed by SMEs ➡ Over a quarter of UK exports come from SMEs Almost every billion-pound company, tech giant or multinational corporation started off as small business. UK needs to help support and nurture the next generation of small firms to thrive and grow. The New Small Business Council has been tasked with overseeing three key areas for small firms – access to finance, removing barriers and accessing specialist skills and support. It will include small business organisations such as Small Business Britain, the Federation of Small Businesses and Family Business UK, as well as SMEs themselves. Along with the Prime Ministers Business Council (which also includes an SME member), and the Cabinet Office SME Panel, plus various SME panels within Government Departments, the SME community is finally getting the recognition it deserves. SMEs want their OWN VOICE. They don't want to be represented by Primes. They are perfectly capable of speaking for themselves. Some of the most highly qualified people that I have met in business are SME owners and entrepreneurs! And every one of them has had the courage to leave safe employment to create something new. That deserves respect. 🔥 I (and many others - including all my colleagues in the Cabinet Office SME Panel) have been banging the SME drum hard for a very long time. Finally, it feels like our message is getting heard. Final point - specific to the removal of barriers to SMEs. The vast majority of SMEs do not want to be forced to operate through Prime-run frameworks and Prime-run ‘SME ecosystems’. They want to contract directly with Government! https://lnkd.in/dmnFZfQB #entrepreneurship #smes
