In today’s evolving educational landscape, traditional lecture-based teaching needs to foster critical thinking, encouraging students to explore beyond their notes. It’s important to guide students in using AI not as a tool to copy but as a resource that enhances their ability to think independently. I’ve noticed in my current class that students are less eager to sit through traditional lectures. However, when I pose questions that challenge them to think critically, they engage much more actively. 🌟 Excited to share insights from the recent Cambridge webinar on the intersection of English literature and artificial intelligence (AI)! 📚💻 Recently, a thought-provoking webinar at Cambridge University delved into the evolving relationship between English literature and artificial intelligence (AI), sparking discussions on whether AI and technology could replace traditional teaching methods in our technologically savvy world. One of the central questions that emerged was whether AI has the potential to replace teachers altogether. While AI undoubtedly has the capacity to assist and enhance teaching practices, the consensus among participants was that the social and emotional connection between teachers and students is irreplaceable. During the webinar, it was highlighted that the effectiveness of teachers is contingent upon their continuous growth and learning. The sentiment expressed was that teachers who consistently strive to learn and bring new insights and methodologies into their classrooms are able to create meaningful and impactful learning experiences for their students. The discussions underscored the importance of teachers adapting and utilizing AI tools, such as Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) and innovative pedagogies, to augment their teaching practices rather than replace them. ⚡️Evidence-based Strategies in the AI Era The more I teach, the more I see that evidence-based practices are the foundation of good teaching, especially in the age of AI. Here are three of my favorite student-centered approaches: 🫶 UDL: Making learning more accessible and inclusive through engagement, representation, and expression. ➡️ Am I engaging students with resources and learning experiences that are relevant and meaningful to them? 🤖 I use AI to check my course materials for accessibility, conciseness, and clarity to help students sustain effort. ----‐--------------- 🧠 Metacognition: Thinking about thinking. ➡️ Am I giving students opportunities to reflect on their learning? 🤖 I offer opportunities to reflect on their writing process and use of GenAI to encourage transparency in the writing process. ----‐--------------- 🔁 Culturally Responsive Teaching: Respecting students cultural backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences and connecting them with the learning process. ➡️ Is the learning environment open and safe? Do students feel psychologically safe in our course so they can focus on learning? 🤖 I use AI to spot-check feedback and comments for empathy and tone. ----‐--------------- Putting Theory into Practice: How does this look in my course? ✅️ Regular email check-ins and positive reinforcement ✅️ Offering assignment revision opportunities ✅️ Flexible deadlines ✅️ Discussions that encourage reflection ✅️ AI-assisted feedback review These strategies have helped me create a supportive online learning environment and students seem to feel safe to express their needs and concerns, which makes me happy and students tell me they appreciate it! 🤓 What evidence-based practices do you use in your teaching? Yesterday, we delivered our first workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Education at Baku-Oxford School, and one major takeaway was addressing teachers’ anxiety about the rapid pace of technological advancements. Many teachers feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of challenges AI presents, but expecting to tackle them all at once only adds to the stress. Instead, we suggested a more manageable and constructive approach. I introduced an activity adapted from Duncan Foord's excellent book, 'The Developing Teacher' (highly recommended!). The activity, called “Coffee Stains,” focuses on identifying and addressing small but persistent irritations in the workplace. Here’s how we applied it to AI-related concerns: 1️⃣ Teachers identified three “coffee stains”—their top three AI-related concerns. 2️⃣ For each, they considered: ✔️ What can I do about it? ✔️ How and when can I address it? 3️⃣ Finally, they added these actions to their to-do lists to progressively check in on their progress. This method encourages teachers to prioritize, think critically, and actively seek solutions, whether it’s reaching out to colleagues for support or exploring training opportunities. The goal is not to solve everything at once but to focus on manageable steps that reduce anxiety and promote confidence in dealing with AI.
