Fly brain breakthrough 'huge leap' to unlock human mind For the first time scientists researching the brain of a fly have identified the position, shape and connections of every single one of its 130,000 cells and 50 million connections. It's the most detailed analysis of the brain of an adult animal ever produced. One leading brain specialist independent of the new research described the breakthrough as a "huge leap" in our understanding of our own brains. Unlocking the Brain's Hidden GPS: The Nobel-Winning Discovery In the bustling corridors of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, a groundbreaking discovery was unfolding that would change our understanding of the human brain forever. It all began in 2005, when May-Britt and Edvard I. Moser made a remarkable finding. They identified grid cells in the brains of rats, cells that created a coordinated grid-like pattern as the rats moved through space. These cells acted like a sophisticated internal map, giving the animals a sense of location and direction. It was as if the brain had its very own GPS. The Mosers' work built on earlier discoveries by John O'Keefe, a British-American neuroscientist. Back in 1971, O'Keefe had found that certain cells in the hippocampus, called place cells, activated when a rat was in a specific location. These place cells and the grid cells discovered by the Mosers were pieces of a larger puzzle, revealing how the brain constructs a comprehensive spatial map. Fast forward to 2014, and the significance of these discoveries was recognized on the grandest stage. May-Britt and Edvard Moser, along with John O'Keefe, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Their pioneering work had unveiled the brain's GPS, shedding light on how we navigate our world. Their journey wasn't just about scientific curiosity; it was a testament to perseverance, collaboration, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. The Mosers' partnership, both in marriage and in the lab, exemplified how teamwork can lead to extraordinary breakthroughs. Today, as we navigate through our daily lives, it's humbling to think that each step we take, each turn we make, is guided by the intricate dance of neurons discovered by these brilliant scientists. Their work not only deepens our understanding of the brain but also inspires us to keep exploring the uncharted territories of science. #NobelPrize #Neuroscience #BrainGPS #ScienceStory #Innovation #ScientificDiscovery #Neurobiology #BrainResearch #PioneersInScience #MayBrittMoser #EdvardMoser #JohnOKeefe

It was difficult to demonstrate the vibration free last week in Micronora trade fair - Microtechnology & Precision as human eye can't see that little but all the people who visited us saw immediate potential for industrial applications such as: - #opticfiber alignment - #watch component handling - #robotic and #cobotic heads for final alignment - and so much more #greatideas we could talk about All the benefits adds up to make Acuvi micromanipulator the best in class. And of course, this #micromanipulator remains the reference in #lifescience. If you have the chance to go to SfN Neuroscience 2024, you will see it ;) Or if you are in Europe, it will be next displayed on Precisiebeurs 2024 in Netherlands 🇳🇱
Some more details of what we will be showing at SfN's Neuroscience 2024... In addition to our in vivo solutions, we will of course be bringing our general patch clamp products, such as our fully integrated uM-Patch slice patch clamp rigs, which feature the uMp-3 micromanipulators - the most stable and vibration free patch clamp micromanipulators on the market (see the video below for a direct comparison to a leading competitor). Drop us a message right here in LinkedIn to schedule some time to talk about your research and how we can help take your experiments to the next level. Or simply drop by our booth (1582)! #neuroscience #sfn2024 #patchclamp #zerodrift #vibrationfree

In order to proactively and responsibly govern neurotechnology, the EU needs to consider a wide range of policy options. So what exactly are those options? That's the question at that ICFG's Maria Koomen, Paweł Świeboda and Virginia Mahieu met with the Institute of Neuroethics (IoNx) to discuss. With the OECD - OCDE guidelines launched in Paris earlier this week (see our previous post for a breakdown of that), it was the perfect starting point for a deep dive into what is needed to develop a robust EU-wide framework. 👀 Watch this space for more detailed outcomes from this exciting workshop... #neurotechnology #neuroscience #neuroethics

Imagine each neuron as a maestro in an orchestra of billions of neurons, a symphony of electrical signals and chemical whispers. Nestled in the complex folds of the brain, these microscopic nerve cells interact with each other through a beautiful ballet of impulses. An electric pulse is sent rushing down an axon, a fast-conducting highway, when a neuron fires. This pulse causes the release of neurotransmitters—molecular messengers—into the synaptic gap as it approaches the synapse, the axon's destination. Similar to keys fitting into locks, these molecules float over the tiny fissure and attach to receptors on the dendrites of the nearby neuron. This binding initiates a fresh electrical impulse that travels at lightening speed from neuron to neuron. Everything we do, including our movements, memories, and thoughts, is driven by this constant chatter. The brain is a living network of unmatched complexity and beauty, an astounding feat of biological engineering with its 86 billion neurons creating trillions of connections. #theconnectome #thebrain #neuroscience #neuroengineering
