Sharing what all I did and learned in the first month of my first VC internship: 1) Researching new and upcoming markets. 2) Reading tons of relevant material online related to the markets I’m researching. 3) Identifying startups and opportunities in these markets. 4) Deriving the market size of the sector. 5) Reaching out to people working in the same segment and learning from them. 6) Once again, reading every piece of information available on the sub-niche market. VC job isn’t just about meeting new founders and deciding whether to invest in their ideas. There’s so much more happening behind the scenes in a VC firm, and an immense amount to learn. I’m genuinely excited and grateful to be learning all these things :)

Hello All, This summer of 2024, I secured an internship at Akshay Vardhaman Services, a investment fund specializing in investments in SME companies, both in the secondary market and the pre-IPO segment. The one-month period I have spent here has been incredibly learning-intensive and has expanded my understanding of investments. Transitioning from an engineering to a finance background was always a period of self-doubt for me, but during the internship, I realized that my engineering knowledge turned out to be highly beneficial for making technology-related investments. It helped me navigate and understand the business offerings and assess whether the company we were considering investing in would have future demand for its products or services. I immersed myself in the world of SME companies, where you must build conviction based on the story, management, and future plans of the company. This aspect often outweighs the numbers because, at a nascent stage, the numbers might not fully justify the problem the company is addressing. Moreover, the highlight of the internship was exploring the realm of pre-IPO investments, having meetings with promoters in their factories or offices, and understanding the business alongside them. With this experience and the knowledge I have gained during this period, I wish to continue my journey of "Utilizing Tech Knowledge to Navigate Investment Decisions." Recently, I have been tasked with researching the market share and various alternatives in the market. I have also been helping create their first Whitepaper! I have learned the ins and outs of what a startup company looks like. This has been from the venture capital point and how you go through various rounds of funding to the research side and the importance of truly knowing your industry and market. The best aspect of my job is its size. This summer, for my first Internship, I wanted hands-on experience, and that is what I found here. 🌟 I’m pleased to share that I’ve just completed my 10-week summer internship at Carpediem Capital Partners, an India-based private equity firm, with over $100Mn AUM.🌟 Over the past couple of months, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the world of private equity and gain hands-on experience across various stages of the investment process: 1️⃣Early-Stage Due Diligence: As part of the investment team, I worked on deals across diverse sectors, including F&B, fintech, and QSR. I conducted initial stage diligence, prepared and presented briefs, and authored detailed industry reports. This exposure allowed me to appreciate the unique dynamics of each industry and its key players, significantly enhancing my research and data visualization skills. 2️⃣External Correspondence: I participated in external meetings with bankers and founders, leveraging these interactions to better understand how potential deals aligned with our investment mandate and to address questions raised during early-stage due diligence. 3️⃣Financial Analysis & Valuation: In the latter deal stages, I applied my experience in financial analysis, becoming more adept at working with financial models and understanding the importance of stress-testing underlying assumptions. I compiled data on private companies to identify precedent transaction comparables and used trading comps for public firms, enabling a comprehensive valuation analysis. I then presented these findings to my colleagues as we progressed through the deal process. 4️⃣Investment Note: I collaborated with colleagues to produce detailed investment notes and preliminary investment memorandums (IMs). This process involved synthesizing substantial amounts of information, maintaining correspondence with bankers, formulating and discussing queries, conducting financial analysis, and creating key data visualizations to facilitate understanding. These documents were presented during weekly deal calls to gather insights and feedback from our colleagues before advancing to later deal stages. --- Overall, this internship has been an incredibly rewarding experience, laying a solid foundation for my future career. I’ve gained a deeper appreciation of the investment process and the dynamics of interactions with both buy-side and sell-side institutions. A huge thank you to the entire team at Carpediem Capital Partners for their mentorship and support. This experience has solidified my passion for M&A and investment, and I’m excited to continue building on the knowledge and skills I’ve acquired.
