This year, the #NAVCAConference will explore the future of local infrastructure. With leadership and advocacy at the forefront of our members’ role in their local #VCSE sector, we wanted to dive into the theme more and share some workshop content. One of our first workshops of the day will ask: How can we have effective influence on decision-making locally? NAVCA members link the voluntary sector with the statutory sector – local authorities, health systems, mayoral authorities, policing and more. They identify where to influence for greatest impact, have the evidence and positioning to influence well, and can amplify voices from the local community. This workshop will create space to explore where and how you can increase your positioning and influence; how to identify the most pressing issues; and how to recognise and celebrate success. You will have the opportunity to learn from others’ experiences, share what you are doing, and feel energised and refreshed to confidently engage with other leaders in your area. We know that local infrastructure leadership roles can be challenging. The opportunity to come together and explore how to increase our positioning and influence will be particularly important as we see political change over the coming year. What would you like to learn from this workshop? Let us know in the comments 💭

Congratulations Rachana! Join the GSE, UACGS Student Chpater and the UAlberta Geotechnical Centre in congratulating Rachana for another award, the GSE CGS Paper Award. Rachana will be presenting the highlights of the upcoming paper presented at the The Canadian Geotechnical Society / La Société canadienne de géotechnique GeoMontreal Conference later this month! 📣 Presenter: Rachana Adhikari, E.I.T. Topic: Mitigating the MASW uncertainties and developing a new SPT energy-based data acquisition method for site investigation When: September 12, 5 PM Where: University of Alberta Club Cost: $10 Register through Groupize here: https://lnkd.in/gqwjbH6b Abstract: The Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) method is a non-invasive geophysical test used to determine the subsurface shear wave velocity (Vs) profile based on the dispersion phenomenon of surface waves. MASW offers complementary advantages to conventional geotechnical tests for being cost-effective, environmentally friendly, applicable in all soil types, and can provide continuous 2D profiles for a given site. This study explores the integration of the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and active MASW methodologies by using the SPT hammer as a source of seismic waves (higher source energy), and further providing for site-specific correlations between Vs and material characteristics. The research focus lies in employing a new data acquisition method with a fixed source (SPT hammer) and moving geophones, differing from standard MASW roll-along data acquisition practices for 2D generation, which maintains the fixed distance between the source and the first/last receiver throughout the data acquisition process. A pilot study was conducted in Edmonton, Alberta for the validation of the proposed methodologies. The Vs and 2D profiles were generated for a distance of 15 m using the fixed SPT hammer as a source and 24(4.5 Hz) geophones. The obtained results and those from the standard roll-along method were found to be comparable. This research validates the viability of employing the SPT hammer as a source for active MASW tests with a new 2D data acquisition method. This integration can be a cost-effective and easy way to address the issues of localized information in SPT and the validation of active MASW results.
We would like to extend our congratulations to Rachana Adhikari, E.I.T.! Rachana was selected by The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) to receive a 2024 Ivan Finlay Leadership award. This award recognizes positive change through volunteer leadership. Well done, Rachana! #leadership #geotech #geotechnical #geotechnicalengineering #geotechnique #volunteer
