Canada produces an impressive amount of food annually, with field crops alone accounting for around 94.4 million metric tonnes in the past year. Almost half of that - 46.5% - is wasted, with 11.2 million metric tonnes of this waste being avoidable. This waste also contributes approximately 25.7 million metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. That’s about 253,000 flights between Toronto and Vancouver. Organizations like Second Harvest are addressing this issue by rescuing surplus food and redistributing it to communities in need.
