Gain tuning is a tedious task in #humanoidrobotics, especially when dealing with #MPC based walking architectures. Our latest work addresses this challenge by introducing a fully automated gain-tuning pipeline using gradient-free optimization techniques. We will present it at IEEE RAS HUMANOIDS Conference #Humanoids2024 📜 In the paper “Automatic Gain Tuning for Humanoid Robots Walking Architectures Using Gradient-Free Optimization Techniques,” we propose a methodology to automate the tuning of hierarchical walking control architectures for humanoid robots. Key highlights include: • 🌟 Comprehensive automation: Automatically tunes all control layers, including Centroidal MPC, ZMP-CoM controller, and Whole-body QP kinematics. • 🔍 Gradient-free optimization: Tested Genetic Algorithm (GA), CMA-ES, DE, and ES, demonstrating GA’s superior performance with 100% success on real robots. • 🤖 Validated on ergoCub: From simulation to real-world walking tasks, we tested our method on the humanoid robot #ergoCub, achieving reliable and adaptive locomotion. 💡 Key contributions: 1️⃣ Elimination of tedious manual tuning via automated optimization. 2️⃣ Comparison of multiple gradient-free techniques to find the best approach. 3️⃣ Validation on physical hardware using diverse and challenging walking trajectories.
