Do you have a favourite place? One that comes to mind for me is the Billy Trail on Hayling Island on the UK south coast. Over the past 20+ years I’ve walked and cycled there so many times, whether with friends or alone and it’s different every time. Running along the coastline between Hayling and Portsmouth, sometimes the tide is in, sometimes it’s out and of course anywhere in between. Sometimes it’s windy, sometimes it’s calm. Sometimes it’s warm and sunny, sometimes it’s cold and damp. Sometimes the sea is flat and calm, sometimes there are waves and seaspray. I was recently there on a warm, balmy evening towards sunset, looking across at what seemed to be an overbooked campsite for seagulls. There were hundreds of them and the noise was incredible. Taking all of that in, with hardly anyone else around and looking across the calm water towards the skyline of Portsmouth and the sun dropping towards the horizon, I truly felt I was filling my soul. Would I want to live there? No but I love being there. How you could use a similar piece: While describing a favourite place doesn’t have to be a story as such, it serves a similar purpose. It gives your audience a brief insight to you as a person. This example shows how I appreciate the changing face of nature and a more spiritual side of me that doesn’t necessarily come up during business conversations. That may be the same for you in your choice of place. I could equally well have spoken about how much I love London, which would have shown a different side of me that I suspect is more apparent. Your chosen place might also indicate your values and things that are important to you. You could equally tell a story of something that happened there which may of course be why it’s a favourite place.

One of our daughters has just returned from an incredible 9-week Southeast Asia adventure. From the 1000+ photos she sent, it looked amazing, and her trip was full of incredible sights, challenges, experiences, and people she’ll never forget. Here are 5 tips from her travels that might inspire your job hunt. She broke her phone, had to walk miles in her Crocs as her bus got stuck in a mudslide, and missed a connecting flight because of a volcanic eruption. Your job hunt won’t be straightforward – you’ll get rejections, or your Zoom might update one minute before an online interview. Learn to adapt and keep going. She swam with turtles, stayed in homestays with locals and used Google Translate to chat, and climbed an active volcano (yes, in her Crocs!). You can do the same with your job search - apply for a stretch role or attend a panel interview. Whatever the outcome, you will learn from it and grow. She visited stunning waterfalls, explored amazing local places, and soaked up the culture of every destination. Your goal is to land the role, but don’t discount the process—you’ll learn about yourself, possibly gain new skills, and meet inspiring people along the way. On her travels, she met incredible people and formed friendships that will last a lifetime. Job hunting can feel lonely, but reaching out to your network and attending industry events can create meaningful connections and open unexpected doors. Finally, going back to the thousands of photos she took, every single one is special to her and holds a memory. Your CV is similar—every piece of work you have done is important to you, and you want to show it off, but you must only showcase what is relevant to the role you’re applying to (and not all of her photos would be suitable for LinkedIn 😂).

Every now and then, you meet someone who is really good at what they do. This is Jobe, our tour guide at the Pantheon. Jobe is an American from Philadelphia living in Rome for over 30 years. Jobe is by far the best tour guide I have come across in a very long time. Spotting a real professional in their particular industry or job, whatever it is… is a gift, model of behavior and a source of inspiration. #excellence #rolemodel

Ah, the majestic journey of job hunting in London as a recent grad - a tale filled with more plot twists than a Netflix original series! 🎬 From the thrill of sending out resumes akin to posting messages in bottles along the River Thames to the agony of waiting for a response like a kid waiting for Christmas morning 🎅🏻, it's a rollercoaster of emotions capable of making Shakespeare jealous! After numerous failed attempts and more 'Thanks, but no thanks' emails than I can count, I've learnt a few things - 🛑 Treat rejection like a badge of honour! Embrace it like each Londoner embraces the rain: with a stiff upper lip and an umbrella at the ready! Consider it a humble pie served 🥧 💔 Don't take it personally! Just because a company didn't recognise your brilliance doesn't mean you're not amazing. Keep your chin up and your cover letter snappy! 🤝 Network like you're trying to score tickets to a sold out West End show - charm, persistence, shamelessness and bit of bribery (just kidding ... mostly) 😂 Laugh at your mistakes (but learn from them)! So what if you accidentally attached a meme to your covering email instead of a CV? You helped the HR team have a good laugh that day. 💪🏻 Persistence is key! Like trying to catch the last train home after a night out in Shoreditch, keep chasing those opportunities until you make it happen. We never give up! 🧘🏻♀️Carry On! Let's face it, if we can handle rush hour, we can handle anything. Once upon a time in Berlin’s vibrant Kreuzberg district, a curious girl named Aylin discovered a heavy-looking, small stone. Though it only weighed 2.8 kg, it felt much heavier. Intrigued, she asked Mr. Demir, a local craftsman, about it. He explained that our brains overestimate the weight of small, dense objects due to past experiences associating weight with size. As Aylin grew older and faced job hunting, she remembered this lesson. She realized that job seekers often overestimate the difficulty of the job market, much like the heavy stone. By approaching job hunting with an open mind and seeking guidance from mentors, she observed they could overcome these perceptions and find the right opportunities. If we take into consideration that our brains conclude from past experiences, those are good news. This enables us to question our unconscious biases which draws me to these insight ⤵️ ➡️ Perception vs. Reality 🌟Our brains can mislead us, making tasks seem harder than they are. ➡️ Guidance Matters🙋🏻♀️ Mentors can help correct misleading perceptions. ➡️ Open-Mindedness 🌈 Being open to new approaches can reveal solutions. ➡️ Job Market Misconceptions 👩🏽💻Job hunting may not be as hard as it seems. ➡️ Question Assumptions 📉 Always challenge your initial perceptions.
